No evacuation orders will be issued in Miami-Dade County yet, Mayor Carlos Gimenez said Wednesday, warning that people living on barrier islands and low-lying mainland areas may still be asked to leave ahead of Hurricane Irma.
Gimenez had been ready to instruct residents to get out, but he said the 11 a.m. Irma advisory from the National Hurricane Center gave him pause.
The storms slowing down, giving us a little bit more time, Gimenez said from the countys emergency operations center in Doral.
Nearly half a million residents who live in storm-surge zones A and B could be asked to leave before Irma hits, Gimenez said. That evacuation of about 470,000 people would take about 26 hours, according to county estimates.

Also not wanting to get stuck on the highway with no place to fill up on gas because the stations are dry.
LOL! You are so cute. Florida is only 100 miles wide. Look how big Irma is!

Where in Florida is your friend and where are you?
I’m in Delray Beach, she headed north a few hours ago.
I think they are making the right call for now. What I would do is issue non-mandatory evacuation suggestions for the low-lying areas. The storm is still days away. If the cone of uncertainty closes, then they can get more serious about things.
The storm is likely to weaken somewhat. It is not projected to remain Cat 5 at Florida. If a storm with 185 m.p.h. sustained winds (gusts over 200 m.p.h.) is coming at you, you best leave. Nothing will remain standing. You will die if you remain in your home. This isn’t going to remain that strong at the Florida coastline. Eyewall replacement cycles and so forth will take a toll on it. Sometimes they don’t recover from these cycles.
However, a Cat 4 is still very dangerous. The wind damage cannot be predicted. It is now known that strong hurricanes produce mini-cyclones (almost like a supercell) that rotate around the eyewall. These can produce extreme wind gusts that far exceed the sustained wind speed. Look up Harvey Rockport damage. The wind damage virtually demolished that town. Brick homes demolished. Cinder-block laundromat leveled. RV’s overturned. Survivors say it was much worse than any other hurricane and the wind was much worse than they thought. You can’t always predict damage based on category.
Where are you?
LOL
If you had to drive in Hialeah for an hour you would stroke out.
And that’s on a regular day.
And that whole peninsula is going to flood too right. I wonder if you thought that Bugs Bunny cartoon where he cut off Florida with a saw was a documentary.
Anyone in Miami who has lived there at least five years and/or has half a brain has already boarded up the house and hit the road north. Can the mayor protect against looters? Probably not.
Surely they’ll call for you to evacuate then... do you have someplace to go?
I hope the traffic treats you well and the doggie stays safe. We have 4 cats and an autistic adult son to deal with here. This is when a private jet would come in handy.
I tried finding out about a private jet. The companies never replied. I'd a rather have flown my niece and dog out. Have no idea what it would have cost but all the hotel rooms, driving aggravations, flying down and then back up, then all the stress.....
It probably would have cost thousand and thousand of dollars. : (
I was looking at a house on the “other side” of US1. My sister pooh poohed that idea. I told my niece if I had bought that place we would have only had to drive ONE Mile!!!!!! : )
We’re not in an evacuation zone... about 6 or 7 miles west of the ocean. Pretty sturdy house, impact windows and all that, generator... but it’s still quite scary... one just doesn’t know how it will all hold up to the winds. We also have a duplex that is in the evac B zone in Boynton Beach... one tenant is going with her 2 dogs to a dog friendly shelter... the other unit isn’t set to be occupied until the 15th.
I hear ya. Sorry it’s so bad there...
