Americans on average spent more on taxes in 2016 than they did on food and clothing combined, according to data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The same data also shows that in three yearsfrom 2013 to 2016the average tax bill for Americans increased 41.13 percent.
In 2016, according to BLS, consumer units (which include families, financially independent individuals, and people living in a single household who share expenses) spent more on average on federal, state and local taxes ($10,489) than they did on food ($7,203) and clothing ($1,803) combined ($9,006).
The average tax bill for American consumer units increased from $7,423 in 2013 to $10,489 in 2016, according to data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The tax-and-spending data was collected as part of the BLSs Consumer Expenditure Survey, which is conducted for the BLS by the Census Bureau. The survey measures the expenditures and incomes of American consumers.

Don’t we pay tax on clothes as well? I bought a pair of socks and sneakers a few weeks ago and I’m pretty sure they taxed me.

That’s only true if you’re actually on balance paying taxes. Since roughly half of the country doesn’t, it’s twice as bad for those who do.
My Federal alone is more than my gas, electric and mortgage combined.
We’ll I’d like to buy more clothes. And better food. But I can’t. Having said that, most would be shocked at how much I make and still be in this position. But between healthcare, health insurance, taxes, fees, tolls, assessments utilities and such, I’m feeling pretty poor.

And congress will continue to screw us all.

They sent all the jobs overseas so people would think things are cheaper and they could raise taxes and they would not notice..

I’ve been there. I used to work with people that made a lot less money than I did and couldn’t understand why I couldn’t afford all the nice things they had, and expensive lunches everyday, and Starbucks two or three times a day. I was saving some money too with tax differed retirement plans, which was one of the wisest things I ever did.
