Gone With the Wind will be gone from The Orpheums summer movie series, the theaters board said Friday.
The Orpheum Theatre Group decided not to include the 1939 movie about a plantation in the Civil War-era South in its 2018 Summer Movie Series after feedback from patrons following the last screening Aug. 11.
As an organization whose stated mission is to entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves, the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population, the theaters operators said in a statement.
Memphis population is about 64 percent African-American.

Look for Gone With The Wind to be gone from Turner Classic Movies next. Soon libraries will ban the book.
Let me guess, one or a couple of letters from the BLM people and that was it, eh? I wonder if you would get the same sort of comments concerning Italians and “The Godfather”?
Did it ever occur to these idiots that no one is FORCED to go see any movie.
Lots of folks avoid “X” rated movies because they consider them offensive.
Adults can make their own decisions.
.
Probably disinter Clark Gable/Maggie Mitchell huh? Maybe recall the oscars. These people are becoming a danger to themselves and the rest of us. Fidiots!
Don’t you know that the South is evil and so is America. If only we could all be liberals and hate would disappear.
Isn’t that insensitivity sort of the point of the movie? Scarlett treats everybody like dirt and pays a heavy price for it.
Other people in the movie, who are fair irregardless of class or social standing, come off looking much better.
The insensitive part would be the romanticization of the beauty of plantation life for the owner’s family. But I think most people can see that sentimentality for what it is.
When the movie came out in 1939, it was a hit amongst black people in the south, much as it was among all other groups in America. An old black women who babysat me in the 60s said that she begged her husband to taker and he enjoyed himself. She was from Birmingham but watched the movie in Detroit.
Gone with the Wind is not only about history, it is history. People who want to change history don’t understand history or life.
They don’t know nothing bout birthing babies.
I hope those folks, who are growing weary of leftist destruction of our history, would immediately stop attending anything at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.
Your only choice is what they want.
Once EVERY reminder of slavery is gone can we then stop talking about reparations, affirmative action, shut down the CBC, the NAACP, and expect everyone to contribute to this society?
Didn’t think so.
Dante said it best, "Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate (Abandon all hope, you who enter here).
I have no objection to them pulling “Gone With The Wind”.
As long as they replace it with “Birth of a Nation”. Much better history there.
I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to turn on the television and find they were airing an episode of Johnny Yuma, the Rebel.
Oh, the humanity!
I’m guessing “Tom Sawyer”, “Birth of a Nation”, “The Jazz Singer” and “White Chicks” will also be banned. Oh, wait, “White Chicks” would be ok since it was whiteface instead of the awful blackface.
Wow. And I was joking last week when I asked when they were going to start banning “Gone With The Wind.”
