A Los Angeles jury awarded a woman a $417 million verdict yesterday. The jury found that Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn users of the cancer risks of the talc in its baby powder.
The jury's 9-3 vote to hold J&J liable for not warning Eva Echeverria about cancer risks is a huge blow to the company, which is facing thousands of such claims across the country. The verdict consists of $70 million in compensatory damages and $347 million in punitive damages, according to Reuters.
No clear link connects talcum powder to ovarian cancer. Some case-control studies, based on asking women who have ovarian cancer about their history, have found a slightly increased risk. But as the American Cancer Society notes, those kinds of studies can be biased because they rely on a person's memory of talc use years after the fact.
Two prospective cohort studies, which don't suffer from that type of hindsight bias, found no increased risk.(snip)
The Echeverria case was the first California talc case to go to trial, and the jury's massive figure will set a new standard for the many talc cases to come. Hundreds more are in earlier stages of litigation in California alone.

The baby powder contains mineral oil. Mineral oil is a petroleum based product. Why would anybody use a petroleum by-product on their skin which absorbs? I use mineral oil to clean guitar strings and that’s about it.
The use of mineral oil got its start back in the patent medicine days of our country. Along with petroleum jelly I wouldn’t recommend it for use on human skin and definitely not internally.

How can they possibly claim bias when memories are so reliable...
She’s sick with a horrible disease so somebody has to pay. Really, nobody will support the rich and evil capitalist entity.
They are just mining gold in a stream of stupid, stupid, STUPID judges and juries. Can’t really blame the lawyers. If the entire system is so rotten to the core that it allows golden apples to hang this low, you can’t really blame people for picking them. (Sorry for the mixed metaphors.)

The jurors should be required to pay half that judgment. Most of it wkk, however, likely go away on appeal.
Talcum powder mixed with epoxy makes a really good filler for auto body work or just about anything else where one needs s strong adherent putty that sands and takes paint well.
I wonder at what point will companies like Johnson and Johnson decide to pull their entire product lines from places like LA or California entirely due to a hostile legal environment. Would it send a message or like cigarettes in NYC just create a black market

Were the plaintiff to actually receive all that money, how many years(months?) would it take to reach bankruptcy? Given the history of big lottery winners it always wonders me why merchants are willing to extend credit to them for longer than a year or at all after a few months.
Because it prevents a lot of OTHER unpleasant things like severe diaper rashes.
This is another example of fake science for profit.
You can watch the movie about that idiot Erin Brokovich in California who scammed that whole town and destroyed a company for nothing. Horse face Julia Roberts played her in the movie.
She gathered up data that people in the town had this disease and that disease and some other disease and said it was all related to one chemical company.
It does not work that way. Look at mesothelioma. It is caused by asbestos. That is a proven link. But one chemical causes one type of disease. Not 100 different diseases.
Just because people used talcum powder and then got cancer does not prove a connection. How many people who used talcum power DID NOT get cancer? I’ve been using it my whole life. (it keeps my balls from itching. TMI?)
My whole family’s been using it. Everyone I know has used it. No one I know has cervical cancer.
Say... Maybe talcum powder PREVENTS cancer!

This scam has been going on a while. I have been hearing the ambulance chaser talc ads for over a year here in Florida.
