The video clip of those mutants smashing his windows with bats is going to weigh very heavily in this guy’s favor in a trial — even if all of it took place AFTER he ran people over.

I’d be scared too and just like others, would floor it and deal with the consequences later. Worst case scenario his window breaks and he is hit in the head. He can’t act, and they pull him out of the car and beat him to death. Maybe that’s what was going through his mind. Maybe. He needs a good lawyer. Possibly not guilty.
It’s not that easy and it’s not that unreasonable to suspect he panic’d and/or decided fight in the fight or flight stage of things.
Let’s not forget the 1992 LA riots and that guy brrmumble mumble mumble getting pulled out of his truck and had his head caved in by a rock.

He’s been charged with 2nd degree murder. Because it’s the PC thing to do right now, even though that may be tough to prove? Maybe it gets knocked down to vehicular manslaughter or reckless endangerment? This whole thing stinks to high heaven, but anything the left touches turns to sh!t.
For murder, the prosecutor is going to have a hard time proving malicious intent, what the guy was thinking at the time.

He speed into the crowd and someone takes a swipe at him. Half a second later he smashes into people. You need speed to do that much damage.

It would not shock me if the prosecutor filed a murder charge specifically to make sure the guy got off at the end of the day. It would be much easier to prove a vehicular homicide charge in a case like this.
Watching again, it does seem that he sped up after he got hit. Someone would have to frame-by-frame it and use Google Street View to determine his rate of speed and acceleration.

He was blocked in front (not sure if that car was under attack too) and he was under attack from 3 sides. The only way out was to back out.

Correlation is not causation. His path is directly towards the crowded street. He never deviates from his path.
