Possible temporary workaround for our recurring response time problem. Also, John has checked in!

Posted on 07/14/2017 1:31:10 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

I'm very sorry (again), but our recurring response time nightmare is back (again).

The good news, though, is John has finally checked in. He's been out of town a lot in the last couple weeks dealing with some urgent family issues regarding his other half's adopted child. Praying that works out soon. He also says his phone needs to be replaced and has not had time to get it done.

The bad news is, he has not been able to resolve our server issue yet. He suspects it's some kind of intermittent error in our network switch or router and wants to replace our front-end hardware but has not had time to purchase the new equipment or get back up to San Joose to install it. Hopefully, soon.

Meanwhile, until John finally gets it fixed, here's a possible temporary workaround:

At the top of the articles index page click: "Account" and then "My Preferences."

Set 20 messages per page
Set 20 results per page

Set them both to 20. You can change them back after John gets the problem fixed.

Direct link to preference settings:

http://freerepublic.com/perl/settings

Prayers up.

“Set 20 messages per page
Set 20 results per page”

I remembered this from last time it happened. May John figure it out soon.

And all of you out there, please donate to FR. It still is the best site for patriots.

That’s a lot less than 32,000+ per month too! win win?

Moores law. Older CPU’s can run faster on a thread. You are a gear head so keep with me. Goats. GTO’s. Newer CPU’s are all wheel drive. Some have a lot of wheels. A lower horsepower same weight car could smoke a GTO because it doesnt spin tires. One core vs multi core. So think driver. The compiler is the driver. So think about this. Older driver applies a little more power through the corners to get the ass end out (Oversteer). It is not how it actually works but it gets the bigger concept across. It is complicated. Think too many cooks spoiling the meal when there is one chef.

Glad you are back, John Robinson.

May God bless the child who is in your prayers and concern, and restore and fulfill her, and her mother and you according to His plan. In His Name, Amen.

No chance this is some liberal group’s intermittent DOS attack, is there?

I’ve kept mine at 20 for years now. That’s actually plenty per page for me.

I recommend removing the option or changing it to 10, 15, 20.

It is a threading problem. Multicore CPU’s don’t play well with legacy code. I know. I code. Have John hunt around in BIOS and turn of hyperthreading and anything to do with multi threads. Add an API call to bind any single request to a single core.

Have seen it over and over again. IMHO it is a problem with FR running on a multicore system. Best fix IMHO is
run FR in a vm emulating a single core system and let the OS and VM handle the switching.

I claim no expertise. The discussion puts me in mind of when my boss’s boss’s boss commented to me about a meeting in which I had argued a technical point about aircraft vibration. He said he wasn’t qualified to understand what I was saying, but with his legal background (!) he had asked every question he could think of every way he could, and he could tell that at least my answers were consistent.

But the solution LTGM described in post 24 sounds like:

  1. it could be a solution, and

  2. implementation probably would not be nearly as hard as a lot of other possibilities, including post 5.

Jim, your 20/20 work around is still doing a good job this morning.

Below is how to set the 20/20 workaround!

At the top of the articles index page click: “Account” and then “My Preferences.”

Set 20 messages per page
Set 20 results per page

Set them both to 20. You can change them back after John gets the problem fixed.

Change settings to 20 and 20. I would not mind changing settings to 10 and 10, if I could.

It’s the russians.

It's must be collusion! Let's investigate! Call in the media, a Special Counsel and multiple Congressional Committee Hearings. They should be able to settle this by, oh, say, 2022 or so.

Thanks, Jim! I’ve had my responses set to 20 per page for several years, so when the site bogs down, it’s not quite so bad. But thanks for the heads up.

I can’t donate much or often, but I “brag” about FR every chance I get, hoping (encouraging!) people to check it out.

Thanks for such an awesome place to find the real news!

Thank you Jim and prayers for John.

Have not done the math; but if 700K Freepers have an average of 300 threads and 300K comments over 10-20 years and those posts are ALL archived - THAT IS A LOT OF MEMORY.

I used my own count for reference and I don’t post that much, but I do search a lot. Don’t try to search for 20 year-old posts - just days. Could this area of maintenance be the problem?

God bless.

Yeah, there’s definitely a latency problem there. Well, we do what we can. I think the 20/20 solution is working better.

I’m just glad that John has checked in and is ok. Guess we’ll just deal with the other stuff the best we can and hopefully he’ll be able to work on it soon.

Thanks for the update!
