HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two additional medical marijuana dispensaries -- one on Oahu, the other on Kauai were recently given the green light by the state Health Department to begin cultivating cannabis, even though the labs needed to test marijuana products still have not been certified to begin doing so.
The announcement brings what's expected to be an even bigger workload for employees from the three independent testing facilities, who have not even begun to approve any of the cannabis that's already been harvested.
The continued delays have one pain specialist concerned for a very specific reason: He says one of his patients died waiting for relief that can only come in the form of medical-grade cannabis.
Paul Klink is the founder of the Honolulu Wellness Center on Oahu -- and a certified medical cannabis consultant. His clinic offers non-synthetic solutions to medical conditions, including the use of medical-grade marijuana.
For one of his patients, Klink said, the wait for the cannabis was too long.
"I don't know why I still get emotional over this, but I can tell you his first name was Peter," Klink said. "He had cancer, very bad. Came in (to the clinic) in a wheelchair. Just sitting down, talking about the medicine, he was smiling."
Even though Peter was terminally ill, Klink said, he refused to take marijuana that wasn't tested for impurities and ended up dying while waiting for the drug to become legally available.
Klink said Peter was just one of his many patients who refuse to break the law by turning to the black market even if it would mean relief.
"Most of the people can't afford the space or the time, or are too sick to grow it, and they need to go to the dispensary," Klink said....

I don’t know that I’m comfortable at all with basically exchanging pot recipes on FR, seems a little out of bounds even if it’s now legal in a few places. But, going back to my exposure over 25 years ago, I will suggest that it works anywhere oregano works and tastes quite similar. I’ll also suggest any excessive enthusiasm regarding relief of anxiety with a grain of salt. I stopped because it started making me feel paranoid and a little panicky.

“I think eating it is no doubt effective, but doesnt it taste terrible?”
Not if they are well made. The ones I use are bland with a hint of cinnamon & the raisins my wife puts into them make them more than tolerable if you eat them when frozen. At room temp it’s not a pleasant experience eating them.
“I said earlier, Id prefer cannabis distribution to be by time released capsule, delivering as little euphoric effect possible, by which, if there are medicinal properties (such as anxiety relief, those can be promoted)...if it helps insomnia, count me in...”
You can certainly get time-released capsules. I don’t use them so I forget sometimes they are a very viable option. I used to have horrible insomnia & crushing anxiety to go with severe depression & for me, cannabis kicked all 3 to the curb.
To get the capsules I can only recommend getting your medical marijuana card & purchase them from a dispensary.
The Constitution grants to the states the power to do exactly what they have done regarding cannabis.
100% correct; I could only add that I would like to see states do all it can to retard the usage of cannabis for recreational purposes; it doesn’t equate to beer usage, as one can drink beer without intent to acheive euphoria; not so with cannabis, unless we use it medically...

disagree; it is a topic in the news, and as such is worthy of discussion; also it provides a very good snapshot of big gov vs little gov regulation...FR has always prided itself on its rejection of big gov, but now pot comes along, and all of a sudden the most draconian gov regimentation, jail time and all, is desirable to some; all over a substance that causes no more discernible harm to society than any other that it improperly used...this smacks of rank hypocrisy, and some on FR cheer it heartily...
I agree that chasing euphoria for its own sake is degrading and socially debilitating; I apply that admonishment to alcohol as well; I have stipulated that I thought cannabis usage should be limited to capsules with little or no euphoric value, if other legitimate medical uses are established...
‘I dont know that Im comfortable at all with basically exchanging pot recipes on FR,’
fair enough; howver, a goodly number of threads have discussed various alcoholic cocktails and elixirs, and the ‘kick’value of each with absolute impunity... ‘
‘I stopped because it started making me feel paranoid and a little panicky.’
again, a good point, and kudos to your stopping, if you were smoking it for chasing euphoria; I last tried it in 1975, at which point I realized the vapidity of my life, a bad job and marriage, and how demeaning it had become when puffing on a weed to acheive a feeble jolt became my primary purpose...

“Free Republic has degraded into a pot forum.”
False. Free Republic hasn’t changed a bit, Central. Folks are just talking about cannabis more than they used to because it’s in the news & a part of the daily discussion.
Freedom loving, Constitution loving folks have been here in FR since the beginning, Central. I expect as long as Mr Robinson keeps the doors open here that will never change.
Its settled science.
Here's the settled science, as summarized by the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine: "The accumulated data suggest a variety of indications, particularly for pain relief, antiemesis, and appetite stimulation. [...] Until a nonsmoked rapid-onset cannabinoid drug delivery system becomes available, we acknowledge that there is no clear alternative for people suffering from chronic conditions that might be relieved by smoking marijuana, such as pain or AIDS wasting." - Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base
What dont you understand about This is a NATION of laws?
The Constitution - the supreme law of the land - grants the federal government no authority over intrastate drug matters.
I take no issue with mild intoxicants used responsibly and don’t quite understand why it’s such a problem to you, myself. But, it’s your choice and your decision to make. Given this rigidity regarding “chasing euphoria” as you put it, it’s surprising that you’re even considering taking up using marijuana again. The psychoactive nature of it is responsible for the intoxication, I have a hard time considering it a euphoric effect. But, if you’re wanting something that helps with anxiety, it’s the typical relaxation that it provides, at least initially, that would do that. I doubt synthetic THC would have much of an effect at all upon anxiety. And then, there’s the issue that arose in my instance and in the instance of many people who used it over a period of years. The relaxation and happy feelings begin to turn into paranoia and panicky feelings, which are not relaxing or fun at all. That is, as I mentioned, the reason why I stopped using it over 25 years ago.
Good luck to you & I hope you find the relief you need asap!
just one last point on this topic, and to your above post; when I asked how you got it, I didn’t mean to imply that I was attempting to do the same; until I can obtain it legally for a valid medical reason only I might then procure it; I was just curious as to the methodology behind it...
The door is that way, statist. Be sure to leave a frothing opus on your way out.
“I stopped because it started making me feel paranoid and a little panicky.”
How much were you using at the time? I ask only because when I was a late teenager when I used cannabis for the 1st couple of times, I had horrible experiences I believe now were because I used too much.
Cannabis is like everything else. Too much of it isn’t good for us.
“Ill also suggest any excessive enthusiasm regarding relief of anxiety with a grain of salt.”
I can only speak from my experience but my issues with anxiety have pretty much vanished since I started using cannabis in Feb 2015. Perhaps if it wasn’t against the law to study properly we might come to learn why it works for some folks & not for others as with any other medicine.
“I didnt mean to imply that I was attempting to do the same; until I can obtain it legally for a valid medical reason only I might then procure it; I was just curious as to the methodology behind it...”
Then perhaps you could have said this at the start instead of: “I decided to give cannabis a try. in what form, and how did you get it...?
Wishing you & yours a blessed 4th :)
You’re relying upon the effects of recreational use for relief of anxiety much as someone who drinks alcohol. Very regular use in my experience, not heavy but daily, leads to tolerance and the need to consume more to achieve the desired effect(s). Over a period of years those effects begin to change, it certainly did for me and for a number of people in my acquaintance. It builds up in fatty tissue, maybe the body begins to reject it, I have no idea but it’s a very real thing. So, I wouldn’t be touting it quite so hard as you have been, personally.
Agreed, my BS meter is going to 11! Such a high level of feces that it easily surpasses the normal 10 scale for worst lie. Dies waiting for perfect bud...give me a break.
Good luck to you & I hope you find the relief you need asap!
people have doubted the efficacy of synthetics, since synthetics have existed; you may be quite right...but who would’ve thought that synthesizing a little white pill made from a bodily protein binding to GABA receptors would relieve anxiety? Yet exactly that was acheived with the variety of benzodiapines, which is the only thing that gives me relief...between benzos and cannabis for the ten years or so I probably have left, give me cannabis, if it works...
So you’re both sharing the same fallacy this morning. Good on both of ya!
You guys should try writing fantasy themed children’s books. You’re both adept at making up stories that have no basis in reality.
I speak for me. Period. Any suggestion I am here on the behalf of anyone else is incorrect.
But I do appreciate the thought. Have a nice day fellas.
I decided to give cannabis a try.
ah, well then, read it again...that was your phrase...I confused the issue, as I do often, by not putting quotes around it, thus the misunderstanding...I have not given cannabis a try since 1975, nor have I made an intention to do so...
Currently I'm not looking for relief, it's you who has stated that you're looking for such to the point of considering using marijuana again, which is what initially prompted me to respond to you. And so, it's curious to me that you're attempting to turn this around in such a manner.
