Expert: Amid delays, patient died waiting for medical marijuana relief

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two additional medical marijuana dispensaries -- one on Oahu, the other on Kauai – were recently given the green light by the state Health Department to begin cultivating cannabis, even though the labs needed to test marijuana products still have not been certified to begin doing so.

The announcement brings what's expected to be an even bigger workload for employees from the three independent testing facilities, who have not even begun to approve any of the cannabis that's already been harvested.

The continued delays have one pain specialist concerned for a very specific reason: He says one of his patients died waiting for relief that can only come in the form of medical-grade cannabis.

Paul Klink is the founder of the Honolulu Wellness Center on Oahu -- and a certified medical cannabis consultant. His clinic offers non-synthetic solutions to medical conditions, including the use of medical-grade marijuana.

For one of his patients, Klink said, the wait for the cannabis was too long.

"I don't know why I still get emotional over this, but I can tell you his first name was Peter," Klink said. "He had cancer, very bad. Came in (to the clinic) in a wheelchair. Just sitting down, talking about the medicine, he was smiling."

Even though Peter was terminally ill, Klink said, he refused to take marijuana that wasn't tested for impurities and ended up dying while waiting for the drug to become legally available.

Klink said Peter was just one of his many patients who refuse to break the law by turning to the black market – even if it would mean relief.

"Most of the people can't afford the space or the time, or are too sick to grow it, and they need to go to the dispensary," Klink said....

She did and went backpacking alone through India! She was a 60’s hippy but I loved her dearly. Her heart was in the right place.....her brain, not so much.

Tried it in college. Made me paranoid and my friends blithering idiots. No thanks.

“Honolulu Wellness Center on Oahu”

I trust nothing that calls itself a “wellness” facility.

(Just my opinion.)

“pot is NOT life preserving, life saving, or life extending.”

After 20+ years of big pharma antidepressants & anxiety meds & getting gradually worse, I decided to give cannabis a try. Thankfully, it’s working for me since 2015. Zero depression or anxiety. I’ve lost 75lbs & I’m much more active at home & at work.

I thank Our Heavenly Father daily for this wonderful medicine. Can’t say I will live longer but it’s a wonderful thing to be alive minus the soul-sucking evil that is depression.

Hiya, Marvin. Hope you’ve enjoyed your weekend.

Did you see where our CONSERVATIVE Gov. Rick Scott signed the medical marijuana bill here in Florida?

I’ll have my card by the end of the month, Marvin. The prices for the medicine is actually affordable. I’ll be able to get 90+ days of medicine for right at $100.00 Ain’t that great, Marvin?

Hope you & yours have a happy 4th, Marvin.

Guess he's a real, consistent conservative - not a fake when-it-suits-me conservative like some on FR who want to use big government to impose their personal dislike of pot on others.

I'm pleased to hear it.

I wasn’t aware that medical marijuana was a healing agent.

Almost broke my bs meter too. Death from no Marijuana.. heck I should’ve been gone years ago then.
Looking inside cancer cells, I just can’t see how pot can fix the problem. I saw some metastatic cells this week, like all the weeks before and I am supposed to believe pot can fix that? Um no.

LOL! Fantastic news! I am so glad she got to go to India. Backpacking alone in a third-world country; sounds like she was pretty courageous. :)

Tried it in college. Made me paranoid and my friends blithering idiots. No thanks.

That was my experience as well; couldn't agree more with you. :)

Take care, FRiend.

“Pothead and proud of it.”

That’s great, Marvin. See I don’t care if you use cannabis or not because it’s none of my business. I hope it does for you what you need it to do. Have a great 4th of July.
