On Monday, L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that the city is fining Carl’s Jr. in the amount of $1.45 million, alleging that seven of its locations had failed to pay 37 workers the legal minimum wage between July and December 2016, reports The Los Angeles Times.

As it stands, the legal minimum wage in California is $10.50 per hour, but Feuer told the LA Times that the seven Carl’s Jr. locations only paid out between $10 and $10.25 per hour. In total, Carl’s Jr. reportedly underpaid its employees $5,400.

$1.45 million fine for $5400 in underpayment. Only in La La Land does this make sense. Commies.

If a private party tried to do this, they would be put away for extortion and racketeering.

The employees should be grateful that Carl hired their lazy asses and get back to work. Oh, sorry. I didn’t post in multiple languages. Like my old boss used to tell us, there are plenty of dumbasses waiting outside the main gate that’ll be glad to take your job. ;-)

LA and the lawyers keep the fine then screws the 'underpaid' employees.

If true, they owe $5400 in back pay, make them pay it. But, the fine is pure, unadulterated extortion!

Carl’s Jr. should give LA the finger as they close their locations there and move to more normal cities and states with normal business laws.

A company that makes a burger that good should never be fined.

If underpaying meant bringing in those supermodels for their tv ads, it was worth it ;P

"$1.45 million fine for $5400 in underpayment. Only in La La Land does this make sense. Commies."

Not only that, but the violations were minor; it wasn't like forced unpaid overtime, which other chains have been found guilty of.

But unfortunately it is not confined to La La Land. It was in Oregon that the Christian bakers were fined $135,000 for refusing to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding.

My old Pizza Hut manager had a better system. Raises were merit based, but the Regional office in New Hampshire wouldn’t okay anything above $3.90/hour (1981).

Basically, those who performed the best would get “ghost hours”. With good performance, fewer cooks were needed, so he met his labor targets. In effect it was a raise for chain food work.

Hold a press conference—tell the city if they pay the fine they will immediately close all city locations.

Demand that the city apologize and rescind the fine.

“Make my day.”

“L.A. law is clear: Employees must be paid at least the minimum wage,” Feuer stated. “Anything less is a slap in the face to workers struggling to make ends meet.

The employees got their full pay. These millions are going to the poor struggling lawyers and city. Carl's Jr. got screwed.

Bear in mind that most of their locations are franchise operations. What you’re proposing would require the individual franchise owners to pull up stakes and move out of state. Not too likely.
