At 69 years old, I doubt my father remembers the conversation we had the afternoon of my high school graduation, but I think about it every Fathers Day.

Picture yourself in their shoes; everywhere they go they get nothing but grief. Why is FreeRepublic.com one of those places? I dunnow but it bums me out.
I see these little black men 4 - 10 years old amazed that I'm interacting with Mom or Dad in a helpful way, Holy crap? He's one of them, a white guy.
I'll take the knarliest most intimidating black guy with nose rings and tats anyday over the screwball jihadist. I just wish my fellow FReepers understood why.
Amen. The CDC is full of poop. This sort of stuff is self-reported, so that is hardly a good basis for making any conclusion. Heck, you can look around you and see that most black men have been made useless in their own families and community, and replaced by the helpful Governemnt.
Yep, many of us are old enough to remember, when there was a major social stigma to get pregnant without a husband.
Those days are long gone and not just gone in the black community.
And if black men go to prison, it’s never their fault.
geezzzzzzzz........
Ms. Smith mixed apples with oranges and got Golash. I’m glad her father was there for her. He is known as a “mensch”, a gentleman, a responsible father, and apparently a hardworking, decent person.
I know many black men who are like that - professional colleagues, professional acquaintances, and neighbors.
They are what is good in and for the black community as a whole (if there is such a thing), and are examples of responsible husbands, fathers, citizens. This includes at least three or more Vietnam veterans, two of them permanently disabled. They take responsibility for their families just as they took responsibility for their fellow soldiers in combat.
If writer Smith had told us more about how her father took care of her, instead of going off on several irrelevant tangents, her story would have been a very positive one for other black fathers to read. It would have told them that they were not alone, not in the minority, and deserving of a more positive reporting image by the leftwing media.
My father has been dead for 35 years but I still miss him every day. Just an average white Jewish guy who worked with his father during the Depression, went to school at night and in the Army (4 years in WW2), raised my sister and myself to be decent human beings (educated, productive, family oriented) and literally worshipped my mother who was also a kind, caring, talented woman.
A father can just be a “father” without race, religion, ethnic origins, etc. as descriptions. The media makes black men to be mostly irresponsible, lazy, criminals, shirkers, and absent fathers. And why not, it sells papers despite the harm it does to the decent black fathers who come home every night to their family, play ball with them on the weekends, take them on picnics, or to museums, or the beach.
If there is any enemy of the black father, IT IS THE LIBERAL MEDIA. Reform should start there, now.
Who is she kidding? There’s so many black fathers MIA it should be considered a national disaster.
Mythical welfare queens? More black delusions.
It appears most are MIA in Sacramento.
That's an extremely relevant and powerful point. It's tragic what the ostensibly compassionate "War on Poverty" has done to destroy the very communities it was supposedly designed to help.
Instead of improving the plight of the black family unit, the Welfare State has been utterly devastating to it, creating a system of dependence which has destroyed motivation and self-reliance, as well as imposing a massive and unsustainable financial burden on middle class taxpayers.
It's absolutely shameful that American society and the Republican party—due to pathological political correctness—lacks the fortitude to repudiate these diabolical Democrat policies and the sinister propaganda used to rationalize them.
The GOP—and the coiuntry at large—must open a dialog which begins to explore measures that encourage ambition, self-reliance and prosperity in these decaying communities.
In retrospect, the Black community should be furious at the Democrat party—originally the party of Slavery and the KKK, and now the party that virtually ensures that the poor remain dependent on those who are destroying them.
The modern Democrat party—even though it now includes Blacks and other minorities in its hierarchy—apparently sees them as nothing more than a reliable voting bloc. Even more disturbing is the fact that there are many minorities within that power structure who are complicit in these horribly destructive policies.
President Trump is right—the Democrats have had their chance at solving these problems. It's time for new ideas. The policies of dependence and destruction of the family must be reversed, and replaced with solutions which create Opportunity and Prosperity...
I'm one of those black dads who married my children's mother, and who has provided for, and raised them under my own roof.
These kinds of conversations bum me out, too.
It has been an iron clad rule in my house since I got married in 1976. We all eat supper at the dining room table together.
That’s when a family or guests can discuss their day, any problems and any accomplishments.
Most guests in my home think I am a little odd to REQUIRE this from everybody.
Thanks for saying that, Max. Guys like me really do exist, despite the negative stereotypes (and unfortunate real world examples of some black men),
Sadly, ignorance is in great supply, even here at FR.

My husband did none of the above———but he was a good father.
.
Happy Father’s Day. Seriously.
True, but too many are.
Thank you!
It’s because of the black subculture thuggery and rap music.
LBJ’s great society broke up the black family. The white family is on the same trajectory.
More benefits to not be hitched !
People go where the sugar is.
Women have become a major problem to men staying with them and their kids. I’ve seen it all too often. A man would love and stay with his kids, but the woman acts so crazy and pushes him away. Then whines that he left her.
Men shouldn’t be forced to put up with anything just because they had a kid with someone. I’ve seen a woman accuse her husband of raping her because he refused to do what she wanted. So he ran and she won’t let him see their 2 kids.
Women are nuts these days. Because of liberalism/feminism.
