Ms. Smith mixed apples with oranges and got Golash. I’m glad her father was there for her. He is known as a “mensch”, a gentleman, a responsible father, and apparently a hardworking, decent person.

I know many black men who are like that - professional colleagues, professional acquaintances, and neighbors.
They are what is good in and for the black community as a whole (if there is such a thing), and are examples of responsible husbands, fathers, citizens. This includes at least three or more Vietnam veterans, two of them permanently disabled. They take responsibility for their families just as they took responsibility for their fellow soldiers in combat.

If writer Smith had told us more about how her father took care of her, instead of going off on several irrelevant tangents, her story would have been a very positive one for other black fathers to read. It would have told them that they were not alone, not in the minority, and deserving of a more positive reporting image by the leftwing media.

My father has been dead for 35 years but I still miss him every day. Just an average white Jewish guy who worked with his father during the Depression, went to school at night and in the Army (4 years in WW2), raised my sister and myself to be decent human beings (educated, productive, family oriented) and literally worshipped my mother who was also a kind, caring, talented woman.

A father can just be a “father” without race, religion, ethnic origins, etc. as descriptions. The media makes black men to be mostly irresponsible, lazy, criminals, shirkers, and absent fathers. And why not, it sells papers despite the harm it does to the decent black fathers who come home every night to their family, play ball with them on the weekends, take them on picnics, or to museums, or the beach.

If there is any enemy of the black father, IT IS THE LIBERAL MEDIA. Reform should start there, now.

Thanks for saying that, Max. Guys like me really do exist, despite the negative stereotypes (and unfortunate real world examples of some black men),

I am not entirely sure of the import of her words but she did indicate that her mother and father lived at opposite ends of the suburb.
