The Trump administration has approved tens of thousands of temporary amnesties for illegal immigrant Dreamers, according to numbers released Thursday that underscore a major reversal for President Trump.
The decision has enraged the presidents conservative base, which hoped he would make good on his promise to revoke the policy, known in governmentspeak as DACA. But immigrant rights advocates, who were harshly critical of Mr. Trump during the campaign, said he deserves some credit for defying his right wing and keeping the program intact.
I definitely think that he does deserve credit for continuing a very successful program for young people who grew up here, said Cesar Vargas, a Dreamer who is now a practicing lawyer.
Mr. Trump appears to be maintaining the pace of the Obama administration, with more than 17,000 new two-year amnesties and more than 107,000 renewal applications approved from Jan. 1 to March 30. Both numbers are comparable to the final full three months of President Obamas tenure.

Trump has done a lot of good stuff, but he has fallen short on immigration promises.
Not relying on the reported impressions nor data of Trump’s immigration controls. We’re still less than 5 months into his Administration.
I agree.
Why on EARTH should people who sneaked in here, broke our immigration laws, stole housing (via welfare), stole food (via food stamps), stole medical care, and stole education be REWARDED by being allowed to stay? This is just an encouragement for more thieving disease-ridden vermin just like them to invade our country and cost us billions of taxpayer dollars we never intended to be spent on non-citizens. In addition, then we have to supply them with bilingual this that and the other stuff, like bilingual teachers, classes, written materials, etc. when they refuse to learn English. Screw ‘em. I’d rather have repaired roads, state of the art hospitals, a formidable military, scientific research, medical research, etc. funded than these needy illegal hounds.
Trump’s immigration and wall promises are shaping up to be pure political swindle.
FAKE!
He still has time to reverse his slide. But a slide it is. First the US embassy in Israel, now this.
If you’re going to approve the Dreamers, at least stop the anchor babies going forward - steps should be taken to crack down on the industry of anchor baby “tourism”. It should be labeled a form of human trafficking - they are basically trafficking fetuses for benefits and citizenship.
And no citizenship for babies of breeders who “happen” to be on vacation in the US when they are 7-9 months pregnant.
Trump should SUSPEND any new or any renewals of these temporary permissions IMMEDIATELY. Any limited number of new or renewed TEMPORARY permissions would be CONTINGENT UPON CONGRESS PROVIDING FULL FUNDING FOR AN IMPREGNABLE BORDER WALL.
When did Trump promise to send the Dreamers back or end DACA?
The best that I remember is Trump saying that it was going to be a very tough decision for him.
...but I could have missed something.
He will allow illegals to stay under 2 conditions: 1) Go home and Register. 2) No American citizenship in their lifetime=no voter fraud/new Democrats. The Mexicans will like it(no ms-13 types), the Democrats won’t-no voters. Republicans get the cheap labor.
His failure to honor this repeated day one promise is appalling. By the way, what happened to the monthly reports on violence caused by illegal aliens? Has anyone seen one yet? I support Trump but the whole issue of continuing to give amnesty to illegal aliens, new amnesty, is outrageous and risks Trump’s credibility with his base that vote for him because of these now-broken promises.
That reads like a neverTrumper wrote this. Fake news until I hear it from Trump himself.
I agree.
I feel sympathy for these people who were brought here underage by their parents, and this is the country they know.
That said, the birth tourism has to end. People literally come from other countries as birth tourists (like China) to have a baby that anchors them here. They have to end that program. It may take a Constitutional Amendment, though, and I don’t know if we can get it.
“He will allow illegals to stay under 2 conditions: 1) Go home and Register. 2) No American citizenship in their lifetime=no voter fraud/new Democrats.”
Sounds acceptable to me for “dreamers” (if no criminal record, etc.) even if the ‘Go Home’ clause is dropped. Would like to see a probation period before TANF can be received.
You’re quite right.
Trump was never comfortable with sending illegals who were brought here through no fault of their own, know no other country but this country and are now in college.
The so called “DACA” were and are quite different from the hordes who were invited and allowed to invade our southern border for eight years, under Obama.
Trump is not without a conscience, but strict and a reasonable man who will get these achievers, with perfectly clean records, their chance to stay or will expedite a re-entry exercise.
The expedited re-entry should satisfy even skinheads.
people should point their fingers in the correct direction -i.e., Kelly
New numbers from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services confirm Trump isn’t going easy on Dreamers, who must renew their DACA work permits every two years.
During the last three months of 2016, just four percent of renewals were rejected.
During the first three months of this year under Trump, the rejection rate has tripled, to 13.5 percent.
According to Democratic House members, Kelly has insinuated in private meetings that he helped save the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows some undocumented young people to stay in the U.S. Trump promised to end the program immediately and yet he still hasnt. In March, Kelly repeatedly told House Democrats that he was the best thing that ever happened to DACA folks, Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-Calif.) said at the time.
Yes you did. He labeled DACA an unconstitutional order and he would end it day one. 100%.
