About 25 people associated with a "western chauvinist" group calling themselves Proud Boys stood behind two police barricades on the Pearl Street Mall on Saturday afternoon to hold a "free speech" demonstration and trade verbal barbs with several hundred counterprotesters, some dressed all in black and wearing masks.
"These people need to learn not to (expletive) with the Boulder Republic," said counterprotester Rob Anderson. "These people need to know they have no place in Boulder."
About two dozen police from several agencies, some in riot gear, stood behind the barricade but occasionally ventured out into the crowd to talk with groups of protesters or pluck one from the crowd. People in the crowd could be seen filming the police as they interacted with protesters.
Demonstrators threw smoke bombs, and at the conclusion of the demonstration, police blocked sidewalks as a small group of the roughly 250 counterprotesters attempted to confront the people associated with the Proud Boys as they left the area.
Boulder Police Sgt. Robyn VanDerLeest said that police arrested one counterprotester who was throwing firecrackers and detained several others but that overall the demonstration was peaceful. She said there were no injuries.
The rally had been scheduled by a group called Proud Boys Colorado, which the Associated Press has described as a far-right men's organization.
It is apparently an offshoot of the organization started by Gavin McInnes, who is a cofounder of Vice Media but severed ties with that organization in 2008.
Police had secured an area behind the Boulder County Courthouse and escorted people associated with the group around to the front of the building, where they were met by the jeering crowd. The press was not allowed into the secure area. But one protestor, who said his name was Josh Frashuer said he had come out to exercise his constitutional right to free speech.
"I'm for western chauvinism," he said. "The West is the best. ... America is the greatest country on Earth."
The group behind the barricade, which was mostly men, wore "Make America Great Again" caps associated with President Donald Trump's presidential campaign, waved American Flags and took turns yelling out at the counterprotesters through a bullhorn.
"Liberalism is the AIDS virus of culture," one man yelled out. "We are the white blood cells."
The counterprotesters responded with slogans such as "Go home, Nazis" which was responded to on occasion with "Go home, commies."
At least one person in the Proud Boys group wore a shirt with "Proud to be a fascist" emblazoned across the front along with a skull associated with the Schutzstaffel, the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party more commonly known as the SS. The Proud Boys say they don't allow Nazis into their group.
Frashuer, of Denver, is a member of Proud Boys and said after the event's conclusion that his group had publicly disavowed the man wearing the Nazi T-shirt, and they left the rally because they don't want their group to be associated with Nazis. He added that his group disavows any "Nazis, neo-Nazis or anyone who is alt-right."
"The Proud Boys are not a Nazi organization," he said. "They are a western chauvinist fraternal organization."
A small group of people dressed in black and wearing gas masks and bandannas over their faces they appeared to be associated with anarchist and anti-fascist groups occasionally locked arms when police came out to speak with them. They confronted Proud Boys protesters after the demonstration, which resulted in a shouting match near the rear of the courthouse.
A man dressed in black with a mask over his face would not give his name, but he said that he wasn't a member of an anti-fascist group or anarchist group but agrees with their philosophies.
"We don't engage in dialogue with fascists," he said. "They use free speech and democracy to undermine free speech and democracy."
Dick Williams was wearing a "Hillary for Prison" T-shirt and said he came to the demonstration with his brother from Denver. But they stayed out among the crowd because they didn't want to be trapped in the barricade.
Williams pointed out that despite someone trying to provoke him into fighting, the demonstration was not violent.
"Everybody got to say what they wanted to say," he said. "It was pretty peaceful."
Boulder resident Elias Sandoval-Clarimon said he holds dual American/Spanish citizenship and that he came to the protest because his mother has told him stories about growing up in Spain when it was under a fascist government under General Francisco Franco.
"My grandfather was a journalist in Spain, and he had trouble getting stuff published," he said. "I don't want to see that happen in Colorado or in the United States. I'll fight for it."

Commie protestors.
The guy in heavy eye makeup & the black & white dress is a prize. Wow,
Is the person in the lower left of your second picture “trans”, or is a circus missing their bearded lady?
Dressed in black and wearing masks-—Sounds like ISIS.
Louisiana in general, and in particular New Orleans, has a law that prohibits the wearing of masks in public, except on Mardi Gras.
No masks, hoods, or disguises of any kind that obscure your face.
They have had these laws for decades, for obvious reasons.
You can be arrested and charged.
The other states should adopt similar laws if they don’t already have them on the books.
If they do, they should arrest these punks..................
Here is our progressive, "spiritual", tolerant opinion
- now you shut up and agree to disagree... you nazis!

“They use free speech and democracy to undermine free speech and democracy.”
Wait, what antifa wants to do is repress free speech
and democracy in the name of “totalitarian consensus”.
In other words, agree with us or else!
I’m not alt-right but they are making me consider my
position...
The way that guy looks might help explain why the others near him are wearing masks.
Colorado ping.
>>Dressed in black and wearing masks-Sounds like...
Could they be...the baddies!?

The Freakshow gets freakier by the day.
I’m for Western Chauvinism too. American First, Americans First, and everything else a distant second.
“Proud Boys?”
Too ironic.
Too close to Pride.
“...Looks like the American Taliban in drag...”
No, they (the commies) actually just look like a bunch of f***ing assh*les who need the crap kicked out of them.
Pardon the expletives. These people make me sick, and I’m pretty fed up with their idiot BS.
“Demonstrators threw smoke bombs”
Which demons?
Notice who actually hides their faces and shouts and threatens the most.
It’s ALWAYS the communists.
Yeah, there is so much wrong with this nonsense I’m too tired to reply to everything. Glad you brought up that part.

I wish I would have known, I would have gone down there. Boulder Republic my red-neck arse. Glorious People’s Republic of Boulder is more like it.
IMO Boulder use to stand alone in its liberal drag...( similar to Austin)
