Deer are generally considered one of the more benign creatures of the forest, going about their herbivorous ways in peace. But as new research shows, there’s a dark side to these ungulates. Using camera traps, forensic scientists have captured unprecedented photos of deer munching on the skeletal remains of a human carcass.

“Herein, we report on the first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains,” write the Texas State University researchers in their new study, which can be found in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. On its own, this behavior is noteworthy enough, but the finding could prove useful to forensic scientists conducting murder investigations.

Out around San Francisco there’s deer a-plenty throughout the hills that surround the population centers. Traffic reporters often report an “antlered rat” down on some highway or another. Not good eating, though, after all these many years the herds still have a bad hippie infestation.

Deer are responsible for more human deaths in the US than *any other animal*.

I thought ‘I’ve seen things to take the cake’, when while casually fly-fishing in CA many moons ago, I saw a deer step in the stream, fish out a trout, and eat it.

Don’t think we are that high up the foodchain!

Dead full grown horses are reduced to hide and a few larger bones in pretty short order around here. The coyotes and buzzards make short work on them.

the skeletal remains of a human carcass

Strange term for a dead human.

Who would donate their body to science so that deers could chew on their bones?

Yep, here in the eastern Texas Piney Woods, the soil is deficient in calcium. The woods are full of deer, but it is very rare to find a shed antler...
