Deer are generally considered one of the more benign creatures of the forest, going about their herbivorous ways in peace. But as new research shows, there’s a dark side to these ungulates. “Herein, we report on the first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains,” write the Texas State University researchers in their new study, which can be found in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. On its own, this behavior is noteworthy enough, but the finding could prove useful to forensic scientists conducting murder investigations.

It’s a war of attrition. It’s either they end up in our smoke houses and freezers or they end up crashing through our windshields and killing us. IT’S WAR, MAN, IT’S WAR!

Or right up the street, who knows?

Fascinating idea, though. Pigs eat people, why shouldn’t deer nibble the bones? Probably addresses a dietary deficiency, like pica.

Goes against all understanding I have of deer.

I don't believe it.

Maybe chewing grass or something, but not flesh that is long gone.

Yes. The deer leave a unique mark on the bone and hold them like a cigar in their mouths.

It’s pretty well known wild pigs eat dead people, so that’s why you don’t find dead bodies out in the jungle here.

I’ve seen deer pawing open expended smoke grenades to get to the residual sulfur and salt mineral content.
