They’re not after flesh they are after bone for the calcium and salts and trace minerals. Deer will gnaw shed antlers and box turtle shells, too.

In Africa, various antelope, as well as giraffe, nibble on bones for the minerals. I suspect it’s something deer have in common with antelope, despite their different taxonomies.
