Deer are generally considered one of the more benign creatures of the forest, going about their herbivorous ways in peace. But as new research shows, theres a dark side to these ungulates. Using camera traps, forensic scientists have captured unprecedented photos of deer munching on the skeletal remains of a human carcass.
Herein, we report on the first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains, write the Texas State University researchers in their new study, which can be found in the Journal of Forensic Sciences. On its own, this behavior is noteworthy enough, but the finding could prove useful to forensic scientists conducting murder investigations.

In Africa, various antelope, as well as giraffe, nibble on bones for the minerals. I suspect it’s something deer have in common with antelope, despite their different taxonomies.
It was on a “body farm” — they place “donated to science” corpses in various situations/environments to decompose and study what affects them for forensic studies
They’ll eat live people, too.
My mom donated her entire body to the medical school in town for the students to study. They didn’t mention anything about staking her out in the woods. Maybe that’s why they did the cremation for free after they were all done. (I mean, who would ever check to see if the ashes were even human!?)

Wildlife guys told me likely porcupines and other critters after the minerals...Didn’t think about deer but their needs must be similar...
