Student Union Wants to Ban Clapping and Cheering Because it Excludes Deaf People

Britain's largest national student union has told attendees of its annual conference they would face "consequences" for cheering and clapping because these forms of expression exclude deaf people.

The National Union of Students (NUS), which includes most university student unions, held a two-day conference on Tuesday.

During the conference, audience members were repeatedly warned that they must stop whooping and expressing support for a speaker because it has "serious impact" on the accessibility of the conference, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Instead of clapping, the students were advised to use "jazz hands" - a gesture when people wave their hands in the air - as it's believed to be more inclusive to people with hearing problems.

Seems to me the jazz hands waving around will only confuse the deaf as they cant see what everybody is excited about...

That’s an excellent point.

In any case, can’t the deaf see people clapping? Can’t they see people “whooping” and whatever? You don’t need to be able to hear to figure out what is going on.

On the other hand, as you pointed out, if they are at an event that requires being able to hear to know what is going on, it’s not the clapping that is a problem for deaf people.

Better still, take away the money for visual arts in new buildings and listen to ‘em squeal.

I attended a talent review show at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind a few years ago. I was amazed at the students skillfully performed presentations and was shocked at how demonstrative their display of appreciation was. These Student Union idiots know nothing.

The deaf would see all that waving and think whatever it is was over and they would just walk out...

Dictatorship of the minority. I’ll bet it wasn’t put to the student body for a vote. this is just that school’s elite of the elite flexing their muscle to see just what they can get away with in controlling those that they consider sub-human.

This is the central flaw of progressivism: it never knows when to stop. It is totalitarian by nature.

There is a point of stupidity where one is compelled to become seriously concerned about the corruption of the gene pool.

"Instead of clapping, the students were advised to use "jazz hands" - a gesture when people wave their hands in the air"

Reminds me of an old comedy show - Dobie Gillis? - in which the beatniks at a coffee shop snapped their fingers instead of applauding.

Anyway, the image of a crowd of people simultaneously using "jazz hands" is farcical, and if these morons persist in this idiocy they will (hopefully) lose the next generation. I have the same thought about all the LGBTQXYZ nonsense; it is becoming so absurd that the next generation will mock it and reject it.

Has anyone mentioned to these loons that being deaf does not prevent one from applauding? They may not be able to hear it, but they can certainly participate.

And how many deaf people are there these days anyway in the developed world? Okay, I just looked it up for the UK:

United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland)

Number: “Government figures put this at 70,000 profoundly deaf people.” (May 2010)

I thought deaf people could feel vibrations from sounds, especially loud sounds like a lot of people clapping or cheering. Plus, unless they are like Helen Keller, they can see others applauding.

um... they can see people clapping just as easily as they see them doing jazz hands...

this makes no sense.

Eating, drinking and breathing excludes dead people, so those activities should be banned, too.
