Almost two years after Texas tried to import an execution drug from overseas, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled Thursday that the drug cant be admitted into the United States.
In July 2015, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice tried to import 1,000 vials of sodium thiopental, an anesthetic that the state has previously used in executions, but the FDA seized the drugs at a Houston airport and has held them ever since. The federal agency has maintained that the import of the drug is illegal because it is not currently approved in the U.S.
In a statement, the FDA said it notified Texas and the Arizona Department of Corrections, which also tried to obtain the drug, that their attempted imports were refused because the drugs appeared to be unapproved and misbranded. The shipments must now be exported or destroyed, according to the agency.
TDCJ spokesman Jason Clark said after the ruling that the department is "exploring all options to remedy the unjustified seizure."
"It has taken almost two years for the Food and Drug Administration to reach a decision which we believe is flawed," Clark said. "TDCJ fully complied with the steps necessary to lawfully import the shipment."

We should just outsource executions to Oregon. They know how to kill people.
They’re afraid the drugs might kill somebody..............
Lethal injection is becoming a joke. There are many alternatives so why bother fighting over drugs.
Why is it not approved? Too dangerous?
I am wondering if this is an FDA career liberal bureaucrat EFF YOU to President Trump. I wonder if he knows about this. We shall see I guess.
Just hang the SOBs!
Comparatively speaking, bullets aren’t that expensive.
There’s freaking books on how to make it at home.
Texas should make its own and tell the FDA to go to hell.
Or burn a particularly sadistic death row inmate alive as a new means of punishment.
The FDA will be falling over themselves to approve Pent.
‘The FDA seized’
A revealing phrase. It implies or even confirms that yet another bureaucracy has its own police force.
It also confirms that the inevitable outcome of any regulatory dispute is strongarm tactics by the government.
And liberals wonder why we oppose ‘common sense’ gun control?
I need to type faster.
Execute murderers the same way they execute the unborn. Fair is fair.
[Quit trying to “medicalize” executions. Lock them in an airtight chamber and pump it full of nitrogen. They’ll die quickly and painlessly. ]
While working in the refrigeration field in another life, I was in an enclosed space with a high level of CO2. Just got out before I passed out when I realized nothing was happening when I breathed in.
That will put you out quickly I think.
What about simply inducing a massive dose of any anesthetic like they do on animals?
Since when is sodium thiopental not approved in the US? I used to use it from work then it became unavailable since everyone switched to propfol and manufacturers cut back the production of it.
I provided sedation in an oral surgeons office and would give it for wisdom teeth extraction. It’s a great drug.
Just say it’s for abortions.
The feds have no constitutional right or authority to meddle in or interfere with medication issues. Those issues legally belong to the states.
Well, we tried it their way, seems like the next sensible step is just go for the bolt gun, pretty sure they’d have little trouble finding someone who would shift jobs from the slaughter plant to a cushy job at a prison.
I don’t get the obsession with lethal injection anyway. You have firing squad (which was used in Utah a few years ago) and the electric chair, none of which require any stall tactics about how Anesthesia A is bad, but Anesthesia B is acceptable, but B can’t be found for sale, so let’s debate in court for years about if we can use Anesthesia C.
