So, what changed your mind about Trump? (vanity)
March 24, 2017

Posted on 03/24/2017 4:32:05 PM PDT by EveningStar

Some of us, forum posters, conservative columnists, and commentators, were not thrilled with having Donald J. Trump as the GOP nominee. We thought his statements were reckless and stupid. And we didn't trust him or believe him when he talked conservative principles. After all, he'd changed parties several times over the years.

When the election came around, some people supposedly on our side actually voted for Hillary. I couldn't do that, of course. I couldn't vote for any Democrat. I thought of voting for Gary Johnson. He said he believed in a strong military. But then he said that he wanted to cut the military budget.  No thanks. And this didn't even take into account his "What's Aleppo" gaffe. But I couldn't vote for Trump either. So, for the very first time ever, I didn't cast a vote for President, and I'd been voting in Presidential elections since 1968 when I was first eligible to do so, always for the Republican candidate. I figured that no matter who won, the country was screwed.

So, what changed your mind about Trump?

I was wrong about Trump.

Now, I wasn't a Bushbot and I'm not going to be a Trumpbot. For instance, I wasn't thrilled with Dubya's domestic policy. He couldn't find his veto pen during his first term (I don't see President Trump having the same problem, but we'll see), but I really liked Dubya. Likewise, I doubt that I will agree with everything President Trump does and says (his tweets and statements at rallies sometimes make me cringe). Does that make me a traitor, fair weather friend, troll, concern troll, sleeper troll, RINO, Democrat, etc? No, it just means that, "Mr. President, I disagree with you on this, but overall, I think your doing a good job." I'm not a cultist. Cults are for the Left. Let them worship the Kennedys, Mao, Castro, Clinton, Obama, et al. Conservatives should not be cultists

I want a President's policies to keep us free, safe, and prosperous. It certainly looks like President Trump is well on the right track.

In the mean time, I'm hungry. I need something to eat:

There are responsible ways to cut the defense budget. DOD itself identified about $120 billion it could save by streamlining (presumably without negatively affecting readiness.) For starters, let’s do that.

As long as the cuts don’t affect the ability of our troops to do their jobs when called upon, I hve no problem with cutting. Start with teh bureaucracy.

In retrospect, I don’t think this election was winnable for Hillary. Period. I said early on that the election wouldn’t so much be won as lost.

I ran to find his book “Art of the Deal” to learn who he was and what he might be like as president. I loved the book and respected the man from that day on. And he is an opinionated New Yorker, a street fighter. I recognized that in his manner of speaking. Talk to any lifetime New Yorker and they will sound the same. People who are not used to it and off-put by it.

” Even with the much-maligned Tweets, there’s an apparent method to the madness. He appears to relish making a knowingly controversial but radically truthful Tweet, then sitting back while letting his detractors make fools of themselves. Then, he lets the other shoe drop. He’s done that time after time.”

don’t reveal all of his tricks...

Anybody but Clinton. If one of the Republican candidates look stronger I missed it. In the final analysis Trump was the unorthodox strongman that could stop a Clinton presidency. It was a simple as that. The reasons are many why Clinton wouldn’t have been a good choice and they’re probably all covered in this comments section. For me it was ABC (Anybody But Clinton).

One other thing... after Decades of politicians running this country I felt very strongly that business person probably could do a better job of getting things done and undoing things done wrong.

I made bets that he would win in the primary and the general a year ahead of time. I won over $1200, my nephew won about $15K doing the same.

My never trump friend thought trump could not win because he was not a slick politician who was a perfect debate champion like Cruz. He had a mental requirement that the candidate must fit this mold of having a slick rehearsed answer for everything.

I KNEW Trump would win because he was an outsider and I knew he is a man who loves America, so whatever he did in office, he would probably get it right 85% of the time which is better than we would get with any other candidate!

Cruz went to school and tailored his life to become a CAREER POLITITIAN. Trump reluctantly put his life, family and business on the line to serve the country and stop the shift to globalism

Democrats and their sycophant media have convinced most people that a president must adhere to a perfect debate and speaking style. Of course, this only applies to non democrat candidates because the media will airbrush any flubs on the democrat side.

I was on board about 2 or 3 weeks in after he announced. At first I thought it was a gimmick.

The fact that he fought like hell intrigued me. His speech late in the campaign at Gettysburg convinced me that he would be conservative in the areas that matter most (judicial appointments, taxes, foreign policy)....

The smith dinner was epic to me. He was surrounded by people who loved him for decades and turned on him. He was like Jesus flipping over the tables in the temple to me. No offense to Jesus, I’m just saying that this was a huge event that not everyone watched. It was truly amazing and no other candidate would ever have the balls to do what he did. Not now, and not in the future.

Well, I respect your willingness to change your assesment based on the facts and the evidence. Trump is such a departure from any one else in American political history, that it`s understandable that people had a hard time wrapping the heads around him.

The first key to understanding Trump is understanding that he`s an extremely unique individual. For 99% of politicians, changing from Rep. To Dem, and back to Rep., would be an indication of a complete opportunist with,no core beliefs. But in the case of Trump, it`s not the case. There are a number of similar examples I could cite, where the conventional wisdom, which would be right 99% of the time, is wrong with regards to Trump.

.....Now I am beginning to wonder, as bad as Hilary would have been, the Republicans may not have been as obstructionist as the Democrats are now. Would she have been a better choice?

Wut???? Would Hildabeast have been a better choice???

Yikes.

Of course, my earlier rhetoric here on FR got me banned because NOBODY was allowed to question the Trumpster.

Come on now... I'll bet that's not entirely true.
