The United Kingdom has followed the United States in preventing passengers on flights from some countries in the Middle East and Africa from carrying devices such as laptops and tablets in the cabin.

The restrictions affect 14 airlines, six of which are based in the U.K. As in the U.S., the ban covers any electronic devices larger than a typical smartphone.

Big new security restriction on international flights from 9 countries. Presumably some vital intel info on security vulnerabilities led to this. There will be quite a lot of fuss for sure.

Some rag head has put together a lap top bomb. Not hard to connect the dots on this one.

Sure, but watch the furor over the particular countries and airlines chosen for the ban.

Also, there are legitimate questions about why, if there are now such laptop bombs, should the restriction be limited to so (relatively) few countries and airlines??

It’s not only certain countries but certain airlines that fly from those countries.

Either that or it is just our intel agencies taking a break from undermining our elections and spying on Americans by making it look like they do something constructive once in a while.

Sure, for such laptop bombs I don’t see how confining them to the baggage hold is an adequate protection. It is a huge problem.

I wonder if the raid in Yemen uncovered some info that lead to this.

A stack of lithium ion batteries from laptops and a simple short is enough to have them burst in to flames. Not sure about the explosive capacity of li-on batteries but I’m sure it’s related.

Something else was thinking that the Federales just wanted access to the hard drives while the computers were in the hands of the baggage wallopers.

But some airports covered by the U.S. ban -- Abu Dhabi and Dubai (UAE), Doha (Qatar), Kuwait City and Casablanca (Morocco) -- are not affected by the U.K. restrictions.

I wonder why.

Why I advise anyone traveling to use VeraCrypt and not have the keys on their person. This is long since past the point of being paranoia.
