CNN reported Wednesday on a senior administration official admitting that the White House intentionally misled reporters ahead of President Donald Trump‘s congressional address in order to get generate positive press coverage as part of a “misdirection play.”
Multiple reports Tuesday indicated that Trump would embrace a more moderate tone on immigration and would announce that he was willing to negotiate granting millions of illegal immigrants legal status. Most of those reports, cited to a “senior administration official,” came immediately after anchors lunched with Trump. Some of those outlets then just attributed the claim to the president himself.
But when it was time for Trump to actually give the speech, he said nothing of the sort. CNN’s Sara Murray complained the next day about “the bait and switch that the president pulled when it came to immigration yesterday. He had this meeting with the anchors, he talked about a path to legal status.”
“Basically they fed [them] things that they thought these anchors would like, that they thought would give them positive press coverage for the next few hours. A senior administration official admitted that it was a misdirection play,” she reported.
Host John King wondered why reporters should even trust the White House going forward. “It does make you wonder; so we’re not supposed to believe what the senior-most official at the lunch says — who then they allowed it to be the president’s name says — we’re not supposed to believe what they say?” he asked. “Maybe we shouldn’t believe what they say.”

Truth is, Trump is doing a fantastic job. The few glitches like Flynn were way overblown by the enemedia.

Where was the “lie” was or misdirection? I’m sure Trump would s willng to negotiate. But would the Dims accept the terms and conditions? The media jumped to conclusions that were not proffered by Trump. I heard nothing in Trump’s speech that contraindicated negotiations. The idiots misdirected themselves by thinking Trump was about to get rolled like a Bushie.
I was wondering about those reports. Why would Trump just give up a huge card without negotiating the point? It just didn’t add up.

Interesting how some accept the premise of this so-called story. No way a WH official admits to misdirection. That alone tells me the story is garbage.
Then .. even if Trump told them he intends to compromise on immigration and then doesn’t put it into the speech ... so what? That doesn’t determine whether he will ultimately compromise or not.

Total bullshit. An article I read yesterday said their posted transcript was received by the media before the speech. This it definitely fake news.

He told the anchors it was time for a bill that would grant legal status to many of those in the country illegally as long as both sides compromised, similar to the legislation sought but never passed by George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Mr. Trump said he recognized that it would cause him political problems with his conservative base voters, according to people in the room, but added that he thought he could keep them happy since they had stuck with him throughout last year’s Republican primaries.

As soon as this hit, a look at FR, Breitbart, and Twitter, showed this went over like a lead balloon with his base with people on Breitbart in particular saying they would not vote for him in 2020. Anne Coulter and Mark Krikorian essentially said it would be the end of his Presidency. It sounds like Levin went nuts over it to. The whole thing was odd and didn't make sense if light of the fact that there is a lot that can be done to encourage self deportation with e-verify, cutting benefits, ending sanctuary cities, etc. Couple that with getting the criminals out, build the wall, and then assess.
