New parents in New Jersey will not only bring their bundles of joy home from the hospital, they’ll also get a baby box. The boxes, which promote safe sleeping, are part of an effort to improve infant mortality rates. The United States has a high infant mortality rate— 6.5 infant deaths per 1,000 births, ranking it 23rd in the world. In 2016, 93 percent of deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) were associated with sleep complications, Philly Voice reported.

I guess I just don’t get this. How is a box going to keep your baby from getting SIDS? Is it the draft or what? Isn’t a bassinet just as good?

Dumb male here but what is the difference between a “baby box” and keeping the baby in the lowest dresser drawer (with a little padding)?

Who needs a box? Put them to sleep in their car seat. Kids seem to love them, sleep well in them, and we’re already forced to have them.

That egg box is exactly what it looks like. People used to set a drawer on the floor for the baby.

It has been reported there was a significant number of cases with infants suffocating in blankets, crib bumpers, stuffed animals, or getting crushed by parents who roll on top of them in their sleep.

New Jersey to be first US state to offer new parents baby boxes

In Germany, they used to pay parents 'kindergeld' - payments for having a child. The birth rate at the time was well below the replacement level.

I don't know if they still do this, or if Frau Merkel has extended it to the refugee hordes.

Hard to believe “The concept of baby boxes originated in Finland about 80 years ago and the country’s infant mortality rate is the world’s lowest, at 1.3 deaths per 1,000 births, Philly Voice reported.” and yet so many families had to suffer the heartbreak of SIDS.

With a heterogeneous population.

I kinda thought a dresser drawer worked pretty well for this. :-)

None, as long as the drawer is small enough, isn't still filled with socks, and you remember not to shut the drawer and then spend a terrified hour looking for your lost baby. *grin*

Hate to rain on your attempts to be haughty, but I lost a daughter when she was four months old.

Sorry, I'm not buying your commentary. Number one, you did have an axe to grind so why say, "Hate to rain..."? Nonsense.

What did my commentary have to do with your loss? Did I say you shouldn't be able to purchase these monitors? NO!

I object to the insurance companies or the government having to supply these on our dime, or the other policy holder's dime that these monitors would drive up premiums for.

If someone has a child, it is their obligation to do everything possible to protect their child. It is not the insurance companies or some state agency.

\ Do you think car insurance companies or a government agency should be forced to provide car seats for young children? After all, studies show children are safer in them.

I didn't make a comment that only those problematic groups I mentioned were having this problem, so you thinking you had to mention otherwise was just silly.

Last but not least, how this became an insult to you regarding your loss, is beyond me. Why would I wish this on anyone, just because I think this evidences misplaced responsibility?

I am sorry for your loss. I hate to see anyone go through something like this.

A doctor and his wife in one of my former neighborhoods lost a baby to SIDS. It can happen to anyone.

Your post put the blame for SIDS on drugs, alcohol and poor parenting. That is completely ignorant.

You can go out right now and find out that there are studies that show that SIDS rates are higher for those whose parents abuse drugs.

I can’t help it if you can’t find one.

I did in about three minutes.

Surprisingly it attributed the problems to the father rather than mother.

Conclusions: There was no association between maternal recreational drug use and SIDS. Paternal marijuana use during the periods of conception and pregnancy and postnatally were significantly associated with SIDS.

Nanny state rum amok.
Compulsory full service pumps.

I don’t think I’ve seen an actual full service gas pump in over a decade. And I thought that New Jersey would have gotten over that bit of idiocy by now. I guess not.
