NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man was taken into custody Monday morning after police say he assaulted a sergeant with a caustic substance.
According to investigators, the sergeant was standing outside the Dunkin Donuts on North Military Highway when a man walked up and threw something into his face. Police say the sergeant was not on a call at the time. A preliminary investigation found that the incident was unprovoked. They do not know yet what was thrown at the officer, only that it was a caustic substance, something that caused immediate burning to the sergeant’s eyes, face and neck.
The officer was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with significant burn injuries.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody near the scene shortly after 10 a.m.; charges are pending.

My sympathy to the officer, and I hope he has a full recovery.
There is something very wrong inside the person that could do this sort of thing.
He is obviously a person that thinks there is no such thing as a good police officer.

Norfolk police have identified the man they say threw a "liquid, caustic substance" into a sergeant's face Monday morning. Dale Patrick Bright, 51, of Virginia Beach has been charged with one count of malicious wounding and is being held without bond at the city jail.
Bright approached the sergeant in the 800 block of N. Military Hwy. and threw the unknown substance in his face, according to a news release. The sergeant was standing outside when Bright approached him, said Cpl. Melinda Wray. He was not on a call for service at the time, she said.
