Full title: Cuomo unveils plan to give free tuition to college students from families earning less than $125G a year.

“College is a mandatory step if you really want to be a success,” Cuomo said during an appearance at LaGuardia Community College. “And the way this society said we are going to pay for high school because you need high school, this society should say we're going to pay for college because you need college to be successful.”

“give free”

So he is paying for it himself?

Welcome to 13th - 18th grade, suckers.

Never hire a person form a NY university.

I heard this on local (NYC) radio a little while ago and halted in my tracks. I simply could not believe my ears. FREE COLLEGE? Number 1, how are NY taxpayers going to afford this? Number 2, this will absolutely encourage deadbeat morons who have no business in college to waste valuable resources and cost taxpayers big bucks for absolutely NO return on the investment. Number 3, knowing Cuomo Libtard's proclivities, he will encourage ILLEGAL ALIENS to be among these free college attendees. Isn't that the last straw?

Parents all over scrimp and save to send their kids to college, and these scum stand to just walk in and get a free college education, leaving the already overtaxed NY taxpayers to pay for their escapades. If Cuomo thinks this will make him a more attractive candidate for 2020, I think he is dead wrong. I remember his "give away the store" stint at HUD and it's obvious he has not changed. He's for EVERYTHING for EVERYONE so long as it's not out of his own pocket. Libtard TURD!

I just got off the phone from my libtard state senator's office and gave them an infuriated but reasoned discourse on why this is a financially and socially irresponsible thing to do. BTW, a news article in the NYT states that BERNIE SANDERS, one of the 10 Morons of the Western World, is shoulder to shoulder in support of Cuomo's announcement.

In the same way high school became dumbed down, “free” college will become garbage.

Oddly enough, you may find the exact opposite trend in a case like this. City College of New York was founded in the 1840s by a wealthy business leader who also served as the president of the city's Board of Education. It remained a "free" college until it began charging tuition in the 1970s, and as a result of this it was extremely difficult to get into the school. It was head and shoulders above other public colleges in the U.S. over that period, and I believe it still holds a distinction with more Nobel laureates among its graduates than any other public college in the U.S.

Personally, I think any "free" New York colleges are going to get filled with Asian students who are the children of recent immigrants.

Why not free groceries, housing, medical, dental, college, cars, life insurance, retirement, why not just make everyone not making $125K a year a child of the government?

So what’s the catch if you don’t graduate?

As a part-time prof I saw a lot of students start but not finish (some spectacularly so). AFAIK they had to pay back the tuition, which I assume most were incapable of.

If you get something for “free”, it’s because someone else is paying for it.

BTW: most of the students who failed my classes did so simply because they didn’t do the work, not for lack of educational resources. I was incredibly helpful & lenient, and anyone with the slightest motivation had endless resources to acquire whatever information they needed to get the modest assignments done (I’d even make clear “if you have no idea what to do, just submit a file saying ‘I have no idea what to do’ and I’ll help you from there”) and the entire semester to do all the work ... yet 1/4 of students just didn’t do enough to achieve a pathetic 60% score.

I once gave failing grades to 3 entire classes (very small, but everyone nonetheless) in a row. Called the Dean each time, who said “give each what they deserve” and they did.

It wasn’t that they were denied or incapable (those were very few), it was that they _just_didn’t_do_the_work_.

The unintended consequence will be that thugs will have a place to hang out and disrupt normal activities until they're kicked out. No decent child will be safe on campus, nor will they learn anything in class.

The choices are going to be the small number of private schools that still have standards if it's affordable, online college, or developing a job skill while still in HS.

So, is a $125,000/year income, now considered the poverty level in New York state??? So sorry, NY taxpayers.......vote him out next time!

So what will the Law of Unintended Consequences have to say about this?

I figure that a man now earing $130K per year who’s kid is just entering high school will do what he needs to do to make less than $125K. So he will work less overtime or quit his second job or work under the table to cut his documented income to less than $125K.

So the State of New York will be receiving less money in taxes from this man’s family for probably 2 years before his kid enters college until his kid graduates from college.

Also the Feds will get less income from this man to SS, Medicare and income taxes.

In general people will be less productive so that their kid can go to college on the taxpayer’s dime. Everybody loses with these kinds of programs because it screws with natural incentives. These programs are guaranteed losers from the beginning. They start from the false premise and that some people don’t go to college because they can’t afford it and it is downhill from there.
