Anyone watching a compass needle point steadily north might suppose that Earths magnetic field is a constant. Its not. Researchers have long known that changes are afoot. The north magnetic pole routinely moves, as much as 40 km/yr, causing compass needles to drift over time. Moreover, the global magnetic field has weakened 10% since the 19th century.
Earths magnetic field protects us from solar storms and cosmic rays. Less magnetism means more radiation can penetrate our planets atmosphere. Indeed, high altitude balloons launched by Spaceweather.com routinely detect increasing levels of cosmic rays over California. Perhaps the ebbing magnetic field over North America contributes to that trend.
As remarkable as these changes sound, theyre mild compared to what Earths magnetic field has done in the past. Sometimes the field completely flips, with north and the south poles swapping places. Such reversals, recorded in the magnetism of ancient rocks, are unpredictable. They come at irregular intervals averaging about 300,000 years; the last one was 780,000 years ago. Are we overdue for another? No one knows.

Is the total magnetic field strength dropping?
Maybe we should have a law that everyone turns their magnets 180 degrees...like a survivalist feng shui.
I do know this...my ferrari is 4 years old...I am noticing a babe magnet reversal
(Ok...a bad joke..maybe I’m Steve Colbert)
Nope it is an unknown power surge...suspect X class waves from the sun hitting the earth.
Every 1st-year geology student understands magnetic pole reversals.
Very true... but they don’t understand what causes them.
Even the top scientists don’t understand this.
My theory of the alignment of the axis was not even a consideration...
Polaris is still in full view. except on cloudy nights...
Looks to me like the real problem is the earth is spinning so fast that it is expanding at the Equator. We’re turning Mother Gaia into a Frisbee...
.
It should be quite obvious by now to everyone that we have been cooling for more than 80 years.
.
My research is on the human energy field and how it is effected by the external environment.
Post of the day!
Lot’s of sunscreen.... yes.
I have no idea why, but I was guided back in the early 1990’s to build my lower level of my house in ground as a Faraday Cage. Lots of welding and lots of concrete..... Even the 1st floor 12 feet up from the basement floor is 6” of 5000 psi concrete in an overhead pour like a bridge with a welded rebar cage on 16” centers... with fiber mesh and then sandwiched with concrete mesh in the top 2”, all sitting on 16 “ bar joist with steel bridge decking base (I have radiant heating in it as a heat mass it is a 150,000 lb radiator)
I’m not a survivalist... but enjoy self sufficient off the grid farm living. It’s low budget which is freedom.
End of times?
Bring it, I have read the book.
“”Earths Magnetic Field is Changing”
Women and minorities hardest hit.”
Followed by Naples.....
Magnetic changes affect volcanic activity. Something’s going to blow!!
WE’RE DOOMED!!!
HAH! Got you both beat, mine was TRIpolar!
Sounds almost like multiple personality disorder!!!
“The North Star is no longer visible from the lower 49 states.”
While I have not actually gone outside at night to try this, I find it nearly impossible to believe.
What you are saying is almost on the level of saying the moon is no longer visible.
I have to believe you are either highly mistaken or that you failed to express your point clearly.
Are you claiming that the North Star can not be seen at night from the mainland anywhere in the US? Are you talking about due to smog or low visibility due to city lights?
Surely I missed something in your claim. It can’t be true.
Untrue
The earth doesn’t rotate as part of magnetic pole drift.
I live on the northern border of Los Angeles and Polaris is not only visible, it’s high in the sky.
STOP Magnetic Field Change! (See your local politician for ways to tax it back into alignment)
You need to get an astronomy app for your smartphone to help you find Polaris.
