The problem was that the forecast missed it, and it was the worst possible conditions, slight drizzle just below the freezing point. There are no slicker conditions, and they were completely taken by surprise.

I just picked my wife up from the airport - she was in Springfield all week for a management seminar, and she said it was colder than a well-digger's ass there today.

As a former Missouri resident with hundreds of thousands of road miles behind me now retired in Arizona, I feel your pain. Recent years they had switched to the liquid pre-icing treatment most of the time in lieu of salt trucks for 1-70 on the west side of the state. Involves getting the forecast correct as mentioned.
I don’t miss the ice when driving.

I-44 had multiple wrecks and slide offs, too. I think roads just got glazed with black ice or freezing rain.

Up here in Minnesota, the salt trucks tell us that the salt will not work when temps are below a certain point (15 degrees?). Maybe they salted, but your temps are too low?
Also, something called “black ice” can form when there is a light dusting of snow on a highway. Tires going over the snow at high speed will melt the snow, which promptly freezes into a thin sheet of invisible ice. And then more light snow comes down on it, covering it up in case anyone has eyes sharp enough to notice it without the glaze of snow over it.
As I keyboard this, the snow plow is out plowing the parking lot and driveway. The stuff he is piling up won’t melt until the end of May!
Cheer up, things could be worse. We are supposed to be -35 this weekend.

Due to Global Warming there is no need to deice the roads anymore.

A couple of years ago my son and I drove from Central NY State to Indianapolis. He was planning to move there and wanted to check the area out. Our trip happened to coincide with a very heavy snowfall, and frigid temps. The roads were horrible, traffic backed up for miles, vehicles had spun off the road. When we finally got to our hotel and asked why the roads were so bad, we were told that the snow clearing budget had been exhausted, and the city couldn't afford to buy more salt or sand. Don't know if that has anything to do with your problem.
In an article I found online, it said that as of the 3rd week in January 2014, Indianapolis had used up most of its snow clearing budget due to overtime and heavy salt/sand usage. The budget was supposed to last through all of 2014.

Our nation is in the midst of a salt shortage.
The election of Donald Trump has caused the millions of Democrat voters to go on a Margarita bender.
Billions of salt-rimmed glasses have been used over the past month.

When it’s like that I just get off the road as soon as possible. Especially when driving the 18 wheeler. The cab is warm and dry. It’s not like I’m trying to make it home on horseback.

My niece slid off the road a mile from her parent’s home in Wentzville. Car is still in the ditch. She said there’s a woman going into labor on 70 and medics can’t get to her. A pedestrian was just struck by 364 and there are no available units. Firefighters are transporting people.

Parts of 67 were closed because of so many accidents. My son works in Fredericktown & lives in Farmington (about 17 miles). He sat in his car for nearly 3 hours. Fortunately, he always keeps water, snacks & a blanket in his car. They had not salted there either.....

Heard on 10:00 p, news that I29 north of Dearborn, had been shut down, stating some drivers had been stuck for up to seven (7) hours!
No mention of not treating interstate highway but with Obama still in charge, I'm not shocked.
