INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter Thanksgiving Day to say he was making progress on his work to get Indianapolis-based manufacturing company Carrier to stay in Indianapolis

What would be considered a “reasonable wage”?
$25/hr x 52 weeks at 40 hrs. a week = $52,000 / year. In Indianapolis, that’s a decent income for, say, a family of 4, but taking the middle figure (for Mexican labor) the differential with Mexico is nearly 9.1:1. If that differential gets cut to 5:1, and again assuming the middle of the Mexican wage range, $2.75/hr, then the resulting $13.75/hr comes out to $28,600 / yr. It’d be pretty tough for a family to scrape by on that, in 2017, without lots of gov’t assistance. :-(
Carrier may be able to curb labor costs relative to productivity, but, it probably takes a lot more than that.
You don't think Mexico has any professional quality welders available? Or that they're not capable? I just found your statement too conclusive for an idle opinion being posted on FR.
The unions have lost membership over their contracts. I know a worker in Indianapolis cannot live on $3 an hour-—but there has to be room for a major compromise.
The unions have blindly followed the Dems for years. NOW—Wisconsin & other states have/are working on breaking up the Teacher’s union & SEIU is in court trouble in many places.
They have been running with the bit in their teeth & Trump will rein them in.
Funny how many current union pension recipients are now getting their pensions cut drastically because their beloved Union didn’t invest the money very well. With the skimming that happens in Unions, I am surprised their cuts are not greater.
Local man was here 10 days ago whining about his years as a body shop man in a union has led to them stating his pension will be cut in half...He tried to convince me that ALL body shops & machine shops were union...I told him no way. Ge worked in the S F Bay area all of his life. He only knows what was going on there.
Well, that’s a good reason.
Will it cost us more to buy stuff? Absolutely, but well also be able to afford it because of higher wages,”””
Don’t know your age, but you are forgetting about a significant part of the USA population.
Retirees re often in need of AC due to their health problems. Even if we can afford the AC unit, the cost of running it can cost extra $300 a month.
FYI: We retirees are getting a .3% POINT THREE PERCENT soc sec raise this year. That is $3 on a Thousand dollars. With a total annual increase of $36 in 2017, I cannot afford either the AC unit nor the extra power to run it.
THIS one problem solved will NOT lead to Full employment. Get a grip.
“THIS one problem solved will NOT lead to Full employment.”
And yet it DID lead to full employment in the day of Henry Ford until the crony capitalists crashed the market.
I'm not suggesting they should pay $3/hour. But, $25/hour plus benefits typically means the actual cost is around $50/hour (at a 100% burden rate, which is what we used during my days preparing contract bids).
There are tangible benefits to keeping manufacturing in the US. The workforce is generally more literate and more productive. And frankly, the cost of "shrinkage" (a euphemism for "theft") is huge in Mexico. But, those factors aren't large enough to offset such a huge differential.
The unions have to accept they are literally competing with other groups of employees outside the US, and act accordingly. Carrier makes a quality product, but they have to set their prices to compete with other manufacturers -- both comparable and inferior. The employees have to participate in cost control, or they'll be replaced.
If the unions would concentrate on finding to maximize the value of their employees to the company, instead of increasing the cost to the company, manufacturers would be much less likely to seek off-shore alternatives.
Also, a lot of pension plans’ payments actually decrease each year, as the principal is drawn down. Some years, if the funds are in the stock market, growth may offset the decline, but in the cases I am familiar with, usually the overall trend of retirement income is a decrease with the age of the recipient.
My AC guy hates the new units. They break down so frequently he ends hip with a lot of warranty work that is far less profitable than installs, repairs or routine servicing.
I think part of the theory of corporate formation is one of it’s principle reasons is for the public good.
In fact incorporating is a PRIVILEGE.
A privilege can easily be revoked.
Dissolved.
Liquidated.
To be fair, MANY factors were a lot different, and more positive, in the days of Henry Ford.
Engaging in business is a privilege? Granted by whom?
A corporation is not the same as a natural man engaging in business.
Yes, and bring back Primatine Mist.
Isn’t that a little bit like saying church congregations aren’t natural people? If the right to associate in productive enterprise is a privilege the government may withdraw, would the right to associate in other endeavors be the same?
Carrier is a division of United Technologies.
They better just only manufacture here as UT is a huge DoD MILITARY contractor.
They need to go back to freon since the ozone hole expanding was more junk science.
Pray America woke
...
Great point actually...we need to reexamine all such liberal-based assumptions of valid science.
A corporation is not the same as a “collection of people”.
It specifically has officers. And a Charter. There might be other requirements.
Lots of private organizations have officers and charters. Organizations can reasonably be expected to act in their own interest. Rather than prohibiting people from associating with one another when those folks react to government imposed disincentives, it would make far more sense to remove the disincentives.
Just because organizations have officers and charters, that by itself DOES NOT make it a corporation.
It must be INCORPORATED according to the laws of the state it exists in.
The document showing it was incorporated is a legal document that shows the corporation exists.
