(CNSNews.com) - Soft drinks were the top commodity bought by food stamp recipients shopping at outlets run by a single U.S. grocery retailer.
That is according to a new study released by the Food and Nutrition Service, the federal agency responsible for running the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as the food stamp program.
By contrast, milk was the top commodity bought from the same retailer by customers not on food stamps.
In calendar year 2011, according to the study, food stamp recipients spent approximately $357,700,000 buying soft drinks from an enterprise the study reveals only as a leading U.S. grocery retailer.
That was more than they spent on any other food commodityincluding milk ($253,700,000), ground beef ($201,000,000), bag snacks ($199,300,000) or candy-packaged ($96,200,000), which also ranked among the top purchases.

Appalling! We buy what is needed and nothing more. We rarely buy snacks or soda, if at all! No, we don’t get food stamps either but the system needs to be fixed. Eliminate soda and let them buy milk and water only.
I haven’t been in a Wal-Mart in ages! I’m a WINCO chick who loves their fresh produce!
I do not understand your accusation; I have high blood pressure and never use much salt.
Maybe its mostly in Flint, Michigan.
You were one of the smart ones! In IL, you see people in Wal-mart buying a ton of stuff with food stamps/EBT and they walk out and get into their Cadillacs or Mercedes vehicles.
Ha! Our son is 51 yrs. old. We only had cloth diapers back
then that you had to wash and pin with diaper pins. I had
“invented” paper ones in my mind; but someone stole “MY”
idea. :o)
Reminder. April 15th is tax day. Don’t forget to pay your taxes.

Interesting.
If it’s not illegal already, buying junk food and drinks should not be permitted if you’re paying with welfare money.

OK, relax. Obviously a joke.
Ah, but those are *high-dollar advertisers*. Cutting sales would cut media advertising revenue.
So, for the sake of the children, the media would destroy every politician that voted to cut this spending.
Cheese, powdered eggs, flour, cornmeal. butter used to be the commodity handouts. Survival foods at best. How many meals could you plan with that, yet people did and survived.
It would not be hard at all to remove carbonated drinks from the SNAP program.
My grandmother was widowed and left in a bad way financially back in the 70’s. When cleaning out her cabinets, we found gov’t issued peanut butter and some other things that were generic brand, white label with plain black lettering specifying that it was gov’t issued.
That is how it should be today. Basic stuff so the kids don’t starve period.
Why didn’t you make THAT your platform, First Lardy?
I am not sure California even removed Casinos yet.
It's called WIC (Women, Infants and Children). Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this program is abused too -- but not nearly to the extent that the so-called SNAP program (aka food stamps) is abused.
Why can't SNAP cards be limited to the same kind of purchases as WIC?
A big huge reason for the obesity epidemic. Then it leads to diabetes and heart disease and puts a huge burden on the health care system. And the Pharmas can sell lots of drugs to these people too. Interesting cycle.
Even Freepers seem to be accepting EBT as “normal”, just in favor of limiting what one can get.
Way back when, I remember that food stamps were actual stamps, paper scrip that could be exchanged for food in grocery stores.
When the recipients complained that it was embarrassing and “demeaning” to be singled out, the credit card lookalike EBT cards were introduced.
I say we go back to the paper scrip. If someone is on the dole, it should be embarrassing, demeaning, and shameful. We won’t let you starve, but we sure don’t have to make it easy to take other people’s money. If stores want to have special check out lines for food stamps, let them. If these lines take longer, that is a feature, not a flaw.
Taking public money should be harder rather than easier.
