THREE SHOTS FIRED AT PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S MOTORCADE TODAY IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS.
That was the United Press International bulletin that came over the clattering teletype machine. It was early afternoon Friday, Nov. 22, 1963 -- 53 years ago today.
I looked at the bulletin in shock. I turned to tell someone, but there was no one in sight. I was at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston. I was a young reporter for the Boston Herald Traveler checking out the Canadian ambassador to the United States who was speaking at a luncheon of bankers and financie

I’d just gotten home from the hospital after a breast biopsy - the days when you went in a day before, and spent the day of and day after...A friend called to ask if I had my TV on. The same friend called again on Sunday to ask the same question when Oswald was shot. What different times - I don’t recall ever having TV on during the day. Evenings for the news after work was it.
I don’t understand the vitriol and hatred here for JFK. He didn’t set out to do anything to damage or destroy the United States and he wasn’t a democrat of the caliber of the dems today. Nowhere near! I would imagine that is coming from those who are saying they were in 1st grade or high school in 1963 and have let more recent years of democrat rule tarnish the history of JFK. Don’t judge democrats of the past with the democrats of the current time. There’s no question THEY WANT to destroy the U.S. We would consider ourselves lucky if those KIND had never entered our lives. Different world - different time.
Good point, but I don't recall seeing recent JFK retrospectives other than the 40th and 50th anniversaries. Perhaps I just missed it one and two years ago. Or perhaps they are bringing the topic forward because they are thugs. Or perhaps this particular author is bringing it back innocently because the threats made him remember what is for most liberals a forgotten footnote from history.
Boring JFK funeral and TV coverage for what seemed to go on forever.
We were sent home before it was announced that her uncle had been arrested. She never came back after that day. Her dad, Robert Oswald, worked at Acme Brick in Denton and was thoughtfully transferred to their plant in Wichita Falls soon after. He still lives there.
The Ford family purchased the Detroit Lions team that day . . . and they have been awful ever since - Even the QB has Ford in his name. The team is cursed.
Well, it is the anniversary. For better or worse, November 22 is a date that will live in infamy.
I was in my fourth grade class when the PA system came on with a feed from local radio news. Back then we weren’t shielded from history and news but encouraged to know it and consume it. I recall that as we assembled, calm and subdued, to go out to the busses home we talked about how weird it sounded to say “President Johnson”.
I remember well the death of Roberto Clemente. My sister was murdered that same evening.
I also remember LBJ and Truman passing within weeks of each other. Armstrong walking on the moon (I was five and my older brother told me the world would explode if he touched his foot on the moon - I totally went bananas. My Mom laid a beating on my brother for that stunt).
Of course, Reagan and JPII getting shot. Challenger-I was in Contracts class in my first year of law school when class was interrupted with the news. Berlin Wall, et al.
Never mess with;
1. The Federal Reserve.
2. The railroads.
And Cronkite reporting how many soldiers died that day in Viet Nam.
It took me decades to realize how different history would have been if Dallas had not happened--and that the Kennedys were nothing but a mirage...
We were fixin’ to go out of town for a day. I heard some kids joking about Kennedy being shot and didn’t take it seriously until arriving in class and the rumor mill was abuzz
When the teacher walked in late, the look on her face gave it away. I can still hear the principal before class ended telling us (”something”) even though President Kennedy is dead”
That, the Cuban Missile Crisis (the look on my-otherwise-always-happy Mom’s face). JFKs speech to the Nation
Mom telling me at breakfast that LBJ will not seek reelection
Mom crying at the news of RFK
The Dim rioting in Chicago (I was there, on the outskirts, just visiting)
Lots of images from the 60s
I was too far from base to get American Forces TV, but by a quirk of nature/atmospherics, I heard of his death at 3-4 AM on the radio.
I called a friend across the river the next morning, and he confirmed it. After work, I stopped by his place, and we talked about it while he had Beatles albums playing. His German wife thought we were nuts.
3) Camelot was a myth ... in both its Arthurian and Kennedian incarnations. What ended on Nov. 22, 1963, was a dream. Unfortunately, it was followed by the LBJ nightmare.
Apparently I’m in the minority, but I admire JFK. He could have sat out the war, but fought his way into uniform, and the deck of PT109.
Had he lived, we would not have experienced Vietnam, or Johnson.
I dont understand the vitriol and hatred here for JFK. He didnt set out to do anything to damage or destroy the United States and he wasnt a democrat of the caliber of the dems today. Nowhere near!
Thank you for sharing your experience of that day.. The rest of the column is an interesting report of what the lead reporter in Kennedy’s motorcade witnessed. Worth the time to read.
Doesn’t seem like yesterday to me either. Our first child was 6 weeks old and I had left him with my mother for the first time. I was going to the grocery store but first I was sitting at the lunch counter for a snack. I heard the announcement from a radio at the counter. The woman working behind the counter was talking and I rudely told her to SHUT UP!
Also “JFK and the Reagan Revolution” by Larry Kudlow.
Good read.
Same with me. Certainly will never forget that day.
I was 3 1/2 when Kennedy was killed. Oddly, I remember the funeral more than the event. I remember watching the cannons and drums, as my Mom was crying.
I remember the day Nixon announced he would resign. I was in the lobby of a local Junior College.
For some reason, I remember the moment I heard on the radio that John Lennon had been killed. I was in the car driving to my new girl friend's house.
Challenger was another... I was at work, watching the launch on TV during lunch. The stock market crach on October 19, 1987 is another. I got laid off from work that day (Plant was sold, all of us let go).... Just got in my car and turned on the radio, "That's the NEWS of the day, the Dow is down 550 points at lunchtime". THAT was a flashbulb day!
And Bobby Kennedy would have been elected President in 1968, but one of today’s Liberal’s favorite minorities, a PALESTINIAN immigrant , shot him dead.
