Democrats are “making a big bet and a mistaken one” by defying the federal government to protect their city’s “sanctuary” status, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said on Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier” Wednesday.
"Sanctuary cities were a scandal before Trump. It’s in defiance of federal authority,” Krauthammer said.
President-elect Donald Trump pledged to withhold federal funds from cities that protect illegal immigrants from possible deportation—and Krauthammer said he’s well within his rights to do so.
“The people who did this in the past were the racists in the south who defied federal authority on civil rights, so now it’s in the name of something that appears to be humanitarian. But it should be. It’s something that should not be allowed. The Democrats have tolerated it, and I think Trump would be within his rights to withhold funds, and he should. And the Democrats are making a big bet and a mistaken one if they decide they’re going to defy the federal government and what seems to be common sense, control your borders."
The mayors of Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Philadelphia, among others, have said their city’s sanctuary policies will remain in place despite the threat of losing federal funding.
The title of this article should be “How to try and rehabilitate your relevancy.”

What was that Kennedy did when the DEMOCRATS in the South didn’t want to follow federal integration laws? What was that? Oh yeah, he sent TROOPS to FORCE them.

And I really don’t think that the Dem leadership can do anything about it, even if they wanted to.
If they lose federal funds most of those mayors won’t be able to be elected dog-catchers.
They love parading around showing all the new buildings and other projects paid for with federal money.

Since these mayors are violating federal law Trump should send the FBI to arrest the lot of them AND withhold federal $$$ till the cities get the hint that sanctuary for illegal aliens is a very bad idea for them personally & for the country.

Exactly. The Democrats did this in the old South when they were in charge and used Jim Crow to suppress the black Republican vote. Now the Democrats are doing it in modern times to build up their illegal immigrant vote. So what is really different?
Probably not. They're playing to their base. And they know that a President Trump can't strip any spending on his own authority.
I didn’t read any of the comments in this thread, so forgive me if mine is repetitive. And reading anything from Krauthammer is bad enough because I can imagine having to listen to him, which makes me sick. Anywho.....
Stop writing checks and send the DOJ to investigate all the police/sheriff departments. Once the money dries up and the cops have to start answering questions, they’ll be bussing the illegals to ICE for deportation.
Buy lots more popcorn, as soon as Trump is sworn in the illegals will besiege the sanctuary cities trying to avoid deportation. Then it will become this leftist cesspools of cities problem to deal with hopefully with no federal funding!
The Dems have retreated to the last ground they actually control - the major metropolitan cities.
But they’re picking a fight they can’t win. President Trump isn’t the type to issue empty threats. He and can and will keep his promise to the American people to rid us of the scourge of illegal immigration.
