A Florida city that’s voting with fear
Boston Globe ^ | 10/2/16 | Jan

Kathleen Kee, a home health nurse, stood at her kitchen counter, still dressed in scrubs, staring in disbelief at the voter information card from the Palm Beach County supervisor of elections.

There, in the upper left corner spelled out in bold uppercase type, was her new polling location: The Islamic Center of Boca Raton.

A mosque?

Kee fumed to her husband, who agreed that a mosque was not an appropriate place to vote — not this year, not given the terror attacks exploding around the world, not in the immediate aftermath of the Orlando nightclub massacre, carried out by a gunman who once worshiped at a mosque an hour up the road.

“How do I know there’s not the same type of people in this mosque that grew that shooter?” Kee says. “Just because we’re here in beautiful Boca Raton doesn’t mean we’re safe.”

Sun-splashed Boca, dotted with palm trees and pink buildings. Where valets park your car at the Publix supermarket as well as the beach club. Where snowbirds come to vacation or live out their days in perfectly manicured paradise.

But behind the good-life gloss lurks a layer of anger directed at Muslims that’s deepened across the country in the 15 years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and boiled to the surface with fresh intensity, especially in Florida, after the June 12 shooting at a gay dance club in Orlando. In that frenzy of violence, an American Muslim killed 49 people and injured 53.

That’s just WRONG on so many levels.
Leave it to Palm Beach county to do that.
That county ALWAYS has a problem and ALWAYS causes a problem during an election.

But they’re offering free clitorectomies for the women, and free permanent haircuts for the men.

They should move the voting place to some nice, non-political venue - like a former slaughterhouse for pigs.

“....Just because we’re here in beautiful Boca Raton doesn’t mean we’re safe.” ...”

That same can be said anywhere in the US.

Carry, always, and everywhere. It is your RIGHT.

Hasn’t selection of voting places always been used to favor the establishment Election Officials?

In Dem Chicago and Crook County and Republican DuPage and Kane County that was certainly true. But in those examples, the greater threat to the establishment was in the primary. so the ruling faction of the ruling local party chose the place that made the minority of their own party feel unwelcome.

...a good reason to vote absentee.

Or a good reason to show up at the polls with an obviously Christian shirt on (although that may provoke a hate crime).

For a time I voted in the kitchen of this little black church in the poor neighborhood behind my apartment complex. I wondered why I could not exercise my most fundamental Christian right (prayer) in a public school but I could exercise my most fundamental civic right (voting) in a Christian church. Seemed totally hypocritical.

Turns out the county paid for the use of the facility so I guess it was more of a business deal for the church.

Got nothing to do that Tuesday? Show up and vote in the mosque and then yell “Allahu Akbar!” as you are walking out. If a commotion ensues, perhaps they won’t use the mosque as a polling place the next time.

I was driving around in that particular area trying to find the home of a new student when I turned the corner and ran smack into that atrocious building. Right in the middle of a very lovely neighborhood, surrounded by palm trees and single-family homes, is the huge, ugly, building that looks like it belongs in Saudi Arabia. The architecture is so “in your face” Islamic, and it’s like a huge middle finger at the community, which for many years, has been mostly Jewish.

To force people to go there to vote is an insult.

You bring up some interesting questions. Will a person who is wearing a crucifix medallion be prevented from entering the muslim prayer facility and denied the right to vote? Will women be required to burka up in order to vote? Will a disabled person be able to bring their service dog into the facility in order to vote?

And finally - who'da thought anybody in America would ever have a reason to ask these questions in the first place?

Better to yell “Jesus Christ is Lord”.

Voting sites are NO Carry sites. Risk of loosing your permit are to high if caught, and you can bet they are going to be checking you out at a mosque vs a community center setting.

Perfect, bring pig parts and leave them in the bath rooms. Smear pig blood where ever you can. Cause mischief.

Wasn’t my point, but thanks for responding.

The MINDSET of “Well, that kind of thing just doesn’t happen HERE” is what I was referring to.

As far as voting sites: Seems to me that putting a voting site in a MOSQUE is an attempt at voter intimidation.

Just sayin’....

Best form of concealed carry in this instance— ham sandwich, preferably left in the rest room after voting.
