Speaking at the G20 Summit in China Monday, President Obama weighed in on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's refusal to stand for the National Anthem before games, saying the "young man" is simply exercising his constitutional rights. Obama also said Kaepernick's actions are hard for military members and those who have served to "get past."
"My understanding at least is that hes exercising his constitutional right to make a statement," Obama said. "If nothing else what hes done is hes generated more conversation around some topics that need to be talked about."
"As a general matter when it comes to the flag and the National Anthem and the meaning that holds for our men and women in uniform and those who've fought for us, that is a tough thing for them to get past to then hear what his deeper concerns are," he continued.
Not once did Obama say Kaepernick's actions were disrespectful, but instead credited him for bringing attention to an issue and for being part of the process.
Obama: Kaepernick Utilizing Constitutional Right
Obama said he hasn't been "thinking about football much," so maybe he missed a Kaepernick's socks: pigs in police hats.

The Santa Clara Police Union has threatened not to provide security services at future games and 49ers fans have been burning Kaepernick jerseys.
NBC Bay Area obtained a letter, penned by union members, to the San Francisco 49ers stating that if the organization does not take action against Kaepernick, "it could result in police officers choosing not to work at your facilities."
The Santa Clara Police Department is the lead police agency at Levis Stadium. During 49er games, around 70 officers volunteer to work and are paid as security personnel. Now it is unknown whether more than half of those officers will show up at the team's next game on Sept. 12.
Not to you Kaslin...............Pffftt. ***spit*** oh middle finger.
I generally don’t like unions but I agree with them in this one. Why should they go where this idiot has been allowed to create a hostile environment for the cops who are there for their benefit?????
If the Niners, normally my team, and the NFL dont get their act together with this (following the Niners’ stupendous stupidity of letting Jim Harbaugh go), my interest in them will go WAY down.
My dad was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran. At his funeral in 2003, I remember the tears rolling down my cheeks as my oldest brother was presented with the folded flag. My dad was a proud veteran who loved America.
I think the SPCU is grandstanding.
He's pathetic actually!
No, I’m standing up for cops and this country. They’re saying the right thing here, which unions rarely do, but there are always exceptions. It’s not about the stupid union, it’s about standing up for cops and the country against idiots like Kaepernick. Hard to believe you don’t get that.
One Muslim defending another another one. Obama loves it when troublemakers put down America because that’s all he’s done his entire life.
The Hilldebeeste will do the same thing should she gain the WH. My understanding is she wouldn’t allow military people in the WH and had them take off their uniform and wear civvies if they did enter.
What a blow to patriotism it would be if we stopped singing the national anthem. But that is what they want of course.
Excellent idea. If they're going to order troops into combat, they ought to be around to see the consequences of their orders. It might make them more respectful of those in uniform.
Another day of Obama hating America.
While drooling idiots think he’s some sort of great thing.
There is much stupidity in a lot of our fellow citizens.
weird how the media never had this as a headline , and covered it for a week.
NOT.
Yeah it’s his right, just as its our right to spend our money where we like. And boo the crap out of him whenever we like.

One unpatriotic biracial POS defending another unpatriotic biracial POS
Birds of a feather
Colin Kaepernick is half black, and looks like hes full black.
Thats fine.
But for him, when he makes millions himself, and when we are living at a time when a black man has been elected twice to the office of the Presidency, for this man to buy into the swill that America is racist and practicing gross racial injustice is so ludicrous, that it shows his radical leanings.
...and now his attire is attesting to the same.
This man is being taught to, and is willing accepting the idea to hate America.
For people like him, it does not matter how well he does, how well he is treated, who wins what offices, etc., etc.
It will never be enough because he has become one of the hate America crowd.
Just like Black Lives Matter, and it is being driven by radical Marxists and communists. It is also being driven by radical Islamics, and finally by an unholy marriage between those groups and the Black Liberation Theology crowd.
Which by the way is where ourObama went to Church of over 20 years.
They teach hate...and they want America fundamentally changed...meaning they wan it destroyed as you and I have known it.
Thats what is really in play here.
Liberals NEVER seem to defend “conscience” for, e.g., Christians who refuse to go along with homosexual or Muslim agenda items.... not even when it is in a private entity such as a small business owned by the person(s) who conscientiously refuse to be forced into the Homosexual Agenda.
“Conscience” for a liberal is an incredibly selective and biased thing.
