... A Japanese company named Trottla already ships child-sized sex dolls globally. Earlier this year, a Canadian man went on trial after he was arrested in 2013 for ordering such a doll. Under Canadian law, they are considered child pornography and he could go to jail for seven years.
But what if dolls like these could help rather than hurt? Ron Arkin, a robotics engineer at the Georgia Institute of Technology and one of the panelists, argued that people should not only legally be permitted to have such dolls, but perhaps some should be handed prescriptions for them. In his opinion, VR and sex robots might function as an outlet for people to express their urges, redirecting dark desires toward machines and away from real children. If it works, it could help past offenders reintegrate harmlessly into society as well as helping prevent those who have never offended from doing so.
...
Some researchers are cautiously optimistic about the idea. It is possible that virtual child pornography content or other simulations such as child sex dolls or robots might be a safer outlet for at least some individuals who are sexually attracted to children, says Michael C. Seto, director of the Forensic Research Unit at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group in Canada.
But both he and Renaud pause at the notion of open access to child-sized sex robots not when we dont know what effect they might have on pedophiles. I wouldnt take any chance with that kind of use of robotics, says Renaud. Maybe some very intelligent and controlled individual could have such contact only with dolls, but for [others], I think that would only lead to the need to go further and to cross the line with real victims.

What if the prevert can’t afford more than a blow-up doll?
Why use dolls when death is so, well, final. :-)
I understand the theoretical, semantic, and rhetorical appeal of these arguments.
But I have to fall back practicality and to God’s will.
On the practicality side, this will introduce people who were either borderline, or normally non-interested, into participating in pseudopedophelia. What’s the obvious next step?
Then there is the God side: You can FEEL inside your soul how wrong this is. We’re all built with internal right-wrong sensors, that God installed. Consult yours, and it will immediately register “WRONG”.
That has some premise problems right there. If someone drew depictions of murder with similar conditions, what then? And why punishment versus treatment? whereas the VR types demand neither and falsely call it treatment.
One of the toughest debates I ever had in Law School was on the topic of whether a man should be punished for possession of paedophilic drawings that he himself drew, with no models
No, we already stipulated that the desire to do something with a child is there. The doll is potentially a way to vent that desire without harming an actual person. The calculus is: would more children be harmed if they were using the dolls (because it normalizes their addiction in their minds), or will fewer children be harmed (since their addiction has an outlet). Not an easy call... and likely one that government shouldn't make... but if it would truly and actually save some kids... again, a tough call.
Methodone clinics are not popular with the public either, but I think they are helpful overall.
Absolutely disgraceful. Evil disguised as therapy. You know people have a propensity for evil. And some will use this, then go onto the real thing because perverse desires are never satisfied. Then the makers of the robots will create more outrageous types of these robots.
Sickness does not cure sickness.
These dolls could solve the problem, if they install snippers in them.
“Treat”? No.
Feed the sickness? Yes.
My sensor says that hurting kids is wrong, and anything that can help fewer kids get traumatized could be a good thing. My sensor would also be thinking "WTF?!" if I ever saw one of the products in question...
As you note, maybe some borderline types will be led down the bad path as well, but the mystery number that makes it possibly a "good" product is how many kids won't suffer because that latex product exists. Most likely we can never know that number, and so my point is entirely academic... but if it did... wouldn't that make it beneficial?
The 50 cent solution is still the most effective cure. And it’s permanent. We just need to will to use it more often and very soon after conviction.
I think I gotta stick with my God-given Right-Wrong sensor. I gotta say no.
The brain might be convinced, but I’m gonna rely on my God-Gland instead.
You said exactly what I thought you would; I’ll make you a Bonus Sammich. :)
It’s all in the head. 235 grains intracranial is a guaranteed cure.
True, but the alternative is that those with this evil desire just go straight to kids. I'd think that we would rather that as many as possible of those impulses be directed at latex rather than children...
up until we get back to older times and philosophies and deal with the issue in more violent and thorough ways... but that's not likely a good road to go down, either. We conservatives are high up on the targets list if the Left ever gets control and society is allowing wide-spread elimination of unacceptable classes of people.
I have a little.... er... experience with porn.
I can tell you, before I embraced God, my experience.
Whatever I settled on, was never enough. I needed more titillation. It's progressive.
This would cause net harm. I'm sure of it. The robots won't be enough.
YAY! BONUS SAMMICH!
Now THAT is PORN!
Bread, roast beef, swiss cheese, lettuce, dijon, and some japalenos!!!
PORN BABY PORN!!!
+ .12
Not a bad way to go. Sadly, my brain makes me do every damn possible number-crunching exercise possible, so I have to talk about the math, no matter how wrong or weird or uncomfortable. Now, what would the numbers be if we nuked Mecca and Medina, and then...
