Relief from the Scorching Sun
August 10, 2016
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
Psalm 121:5
Living in Britain, I dont usually worry about sunburn. After all, the sun is often blocked by a thick cover of clouds. But recently I spent some time in Spain, and I quickly realized that with my pale skin, I could only be out in the sunshine for ten minutes before I needed to scurry back under the umbrella.
As I considered the scorching nature of the Mediterranean sun, I began to understand more deeply the meaning of the image of the Lord God as His peoples shade at their right hand. Residents of the Middle East knew unrelenting heat, and they needed to find shelter from the suns burning rays.
The psalmist uses this picture of the Lord as shade in Psalm 121, which can be understood as a conversation on a heart levela dialogue with oneself about the Lords goodness and faithfulness. When we use this psalm in prayer, we reassure ourselves that the Lord will never leave us, for He forms a protective covering over us. And just as we take shelter from the sun underneath umbrellas, so too can we find a safe place in the Lord.
We lift our eyes to the Maker of heaven and earth (vv. 12) because whether we are in times of sunshine or times of rain, we receive His gifts of protection, relief, and refreshment.
Heavenly Father, You protect me. Shield me from anything that would take my focus away from You.
We find refuge in the Lord.
Psalm 121 is the second in a series of fifteen psalms known as songs of ascent. They are a collection of songs by different composers, with four attributed to David and one to Solomon. Ten are anonymous. If they did not all carry the superscription a song of ascent, they might appear unrelated. The superscription, however, shows they are connected in the liturgy of ancient Israel. One view is that they were sung by the Levitical worship leaders (priests) as they ascended the steps into the temple in Jerusalem. The more prevalent view is that these psalms were assembled so that pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem to celebrate the three annual high feasts in community could sing them on their journey (Deut. 16:16).

My adventure would start by being able to sleep all night and be able to wake up refreshed without my ears ringing. Next feed the dogs and then just relax in quiet.
Oh Yea, no telemarketers or political calls.

Hi Luv!
I’m a Cultural Traveler:
Life has gotten a bit routine for you lately, and you’d like to broaden your perspective.
You want to learn and grow from your adventure. You want to know the place you visit as well as your home town.
You are an open minded and curious traveler. You’re all about immersing yourself in local customs, no matter how foreign they are.
Whenever you’re in a new place, you try to speak the language, eat the food, and meet the locals. After all, that’s what traveling is all about!
Yeah, OK. I’ll go with that.

You Crave an Unpredictable Adventure |
Life has gotten a bit too boring for you lately, and you're really looking to stir things up. You couldn't imagine planning your great adventure. That would go against the whole point of it!
All you need is a plane, train, or bus ticket to anywhere. You'll make the rest up as you go along. You want to visit every corner of the world and have many different experiences. The sooner you start, the more you'll see. |

I’ve always loved a good adventure.
One time I even asked for extra salad dressing.
I didn’t get it, but I thought it was pretty adventurous.
Let’s see what I’m craving......

Good morning, Everyone.
Good morning
Thank you, Luvy, for preparing the Canteen
for today's activities.
As requested, this is Eada at 7 ½ months.

I really don't know why we couldn't
pick all choices under #5.
If I was going on an adventure,
I'd be packing them all.
Got caught up on most of my chores
and now the week is half over.
Going too fast and I still have things to do.
We're in for some hot and humid days.
Very humid this morning, and
the hot arrives later today
and stays through Monday, at least.
Going to have some stormy days ahead but
I need to get to the pool again as there's only a few
more weeks of pool time before they close it.
The Canteen is
Come on in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS
