Mamaw encouraged me to get a jobshe told me that it would be good for me and that I needed to learn the value of a dollar. When her encouragement fell on deaf ears, she then demanded that I get a job, and so I did, as a cashier at Dillmans, a local grocery store.
Working as a cashier turned me into an amateur sociologist. A frenetic stress animated so many of our customers. One of our neighbors would walk in and yell at me for the smallest of transgressionsnot smiling at her, or bagging the groceries too heavy one day or too light the next. Some came into the store in a hurry, pacing between aisles, looking frantically for a particular item. But others waded through the aisles deliberately, carefully marking each item off of their list.

My sister worked at a grocery store a few years back and said that it was extremely common for folks on EBT cards to use them for pricier specialty food that most regular folks can’t afford to buy that often, specifically lobster, shrimp, crab legs, etc.
Among those of my son’s generation the thinking seems to be:
They have to have tattoos/piercings/weed/cigarettes/alcohol
But can’t seem to find money for rent/ car payment /student loans
And they have no problem whining on social media about their money woes
I had about the same experience, i had three brothers and two sisters who married into democrat families, so democrat is all i knew although my imediate family was too busy working to pay much attention to politicts.
In school it seems every one made racist jokes although we did not call it that, it never bothered me but i could not really see the sense to it.
The few who i don`t remember hearing racist jokes from turned out republican later on.
I believe most democrats at that time were just born into it and followed the one who could talk the loudest, some have saw the light and quit voting democrat.
Others started living off of the rest of us many years ago.
I said yes and she told me it was a game she played to keep herself amused. Cash, Card, Check, WIC or EBT. Said she rarely got it wrong.
Also, I seem to recall that one of the big banks — can’t remember the name right now — has some sort of deal whereby they profit with every EBT transaction.
Mmm... Totinos ...
Still get a craving for those darn things every once in a while.
They’re cost just a bit more these days, unfortunately.
Same here. - and this was in the late 70’s!
Traded for in jail.
My wife picked me up at the airport the other day in our ‘95 Camry.
A large family of Somali “refugees” picked up their two daughters in a huge, brand-new, premium SUV.
What pisses me off is that the Cadillac Escalade is always parked in the handicap space and has NO HANDICAP license or Tag hanging from the mirror.
It is cyclical. Generation after generation have been on them. It’s all they know.
Back in the day, my secretary and the welfare secretary shared the front lobby reception window. The welfare secretary, who’d worked there for years, finally had enough. She added up what her “clients” were receiving and compared it to her smaller paycheck, left the figures as her resignation letter and walked off the job that day.
$19 trillion debt says we are past the point we can pay for it all. That is why wecare racking up a trillion dollars new debt.
The financial system will collapse. There is no alternative. It is just a question of when and what event sets it omm.
Meanwhile, keep hoardibg those tulip bulbs.
That is the real tragedy and it will destroy this country from within.
There was a time when accepting government assistance was considered bad. Now it is consider a fact of life and even encouraged. Worst of all politicians use it to gain favors and votes from their constituents.
I know that it would be offensive to some and others would put a stop to it, but maybe we should start referring the poor as the Welfare class since it is now a given that anyone who is poor is probably on welfare.
My transition in college from fairly apolitical to drifting ever further to the deep dark evil side started soon after I got in trouble for a wee bit of glug-glug-vroom-vroom. As part of my punishment for my dastardly deeds I was requires to perform 80 hours of “community service”. Now I did not resent this, it was what it was and community service was better than a few days in jail (though now that I am older and wiser, I think jail may be a better deal). Anyway, at the time I was in my last semester as a senior in college taking 18 units of all 400 level engineering courses. I also worked 20 hours a week as a waiter. And for beer money I also gave plasma twice a week. With all that in addition to attempting to still have a life, I was a little busy, but I had responsibilities to the court, so I found a suitable place that worked with my schedule in the form of a soup kitchen in downtown seattle. I worked there 6 hours on saturdays and Sundays. The work was not difficult, just low skilled kitchen assistance. Sorting donations and throwing out spoiled food, washing dishes, serving, bussing, that kind of thing. But observing the people who used the soup kitchen really began to unnerve me. There definitely were legitamate people who had obvious mental problems and other disabilities, but I would estimate them to be 30 percent. The other two thirds were of sound mind and body, but would shamble in at the appropriate times a day for free food, and these people were almost always extremely rude and extremely disrespectful to the ladies in the kitchen. They would eat their free food, make a mess and shamble out. I began to wonder why with all the stuff I had going I still had time to spend 12 hours a weekend working at this kitchen, but none of the people benefitting from it who presumably were not working didn’t have time to not only volunteer an hour or two a week, but didn’t have the courtesy to bus their own dishes. It is not the “poor” that conservatives hate, those who have legitamate health or mental problems, or even those who just happened to fall on hard times and need some help to get going again. It is those worthless grifters who feel entitled to other peoples voluntary or involuntary generosity who contribute nothing of value to the community is who us evil conservatives hate.
Yup. Only a matter of time before our creditors demand payment in full. And what to we have to offer as collateral? Our freedom and liberties.
Some of them have under-the-table jobs (legal or illegal) on top of their EBT, subsidized housing, obama phones, etc. No one in gummint checks up on them because they don't want to stop it. These are the people who put them in office.
That's why there are fewer riots (other than police shootings). Their people tell them to behave or they will lose the free stuff. It's just like Jesse Jackson extortion payments. Why don't we hear from him much? He pretty much has extorted everyone in sight who's worth anything.
Mostly it's "Welfare Privelege."
Well said!
tattoos are expensive I don’t no how many times I have seen someone who is on welfare with top grade tats and are still working on them despite being on the government dull.
