Mamaw encouraged me to get a jobshe told me that it would be good for me and that I needed to learn the value of a dollar. When her encouragement fell on deaf ears, she then demanded that I get a job, and so I did, as a cashier at Dillmans, a local grocery store.
Working as a cashier turned me into an amateur sociologist. A frenetic stress animated so many of our customers. One of our neighbors would walk in and yell at me for the smallest of transgressionsnot smiling at her, or bagging the groceries too heavy one day or too light the next. Some came into the store in a hurry, pacing between aisles, looking frantically for a particular item. But others waded through the aisles deliberately, carefully marking each item off of their list.

The old saying is that a republican is a democrat who has been mugged.
Interesting read!
Accurate assessments.
Experience is the teacher of all things......Julius Caesar..........
My stepson worked at a grocery store. He said he could spot an EBT cart a mile away, based on the food in it - soda chips, frozen food dominated.
Every two weeks, Id get a small paycheck and notice the line where federal and state income taxes were deducted from my wages. At least as often, our drug-addict neighbor would buy T-bone steaks, which I was too poor to buy for myself but was forced by Uncle Sam to buy for someone else.
Don't blame Unca Sammy, my dear, blame the people who voted for it and feel real good about themselves as vicarious philanthropists. They know how to spend your money better than you do...
This guy’s experience must be from 40+ years ago.
The reality today is that the Foodstamp users I see are immensely overweight, usually have lots of bling and nice sneakers, and also have quite nice cars - particularly the immigrant ones.

The companies who make those things are well aware of it and have lobbyists to perpetuate the rotten system.

I worked in a grocery store at age 19. The young cashiers there frequently poked fun at the food stamp program. Invariably those customers had carts overflowing with Ding Dongs, Ho-Ho’s, sugary cereals, fatty snacks, and one package of diet pills.
Great piece. I did something similar, though my parents could have afforded college. They recommended work instead, and now I have the free time to pursue these “sociological studies” on college campuses, avail myself of their libraries without paying a cent in tuition, while the retail experience paid me to learn much about human nature and enabled me to build myself a financial foundation. (I’m still under 25 and have numerous real estate holdings without any debt whatsoever.)
Every day, someone asks me, “Why aren’t you in college?”
Nothing pisses me off more than waiting in line to buy my budget purchased and marked down groceries than to see someone ahead of me buying a basket full of frozen shrimp and crab legs with an EBT card then drive off in a late model Cadillac Escalate.
It is my theory that welfare is a money laundering scheme of the Bolshies to get the gangs to get Bolshie voters to the polls.
How much do the gang coffers surge after welfare is sent?
Welfare is a temporary helping hand, not a career choice.
Stop stealing my money and earn your own.
I am waiting for the ad with Hillary herself saying this as she did during a previous campaign, perhaps in the 90's.
I had the same experience... Almost exactly, and it affected my political allegiances as well.
How many times have I lusted after the steaks I knew I was buying for the man or woman who didn’t work for a living?
How many times did they treat me like a dog because I worked for a living?
I worked in a local grocery store bagging groceries when I was in high school. It taught me that I do not want to be poor and on the government assisted list. And I’m not!
Well, when your used to living in a stable you can spend nearly all money on outward signs of affluence.
Those aren’t EBT cards. They are dEBT cards.
