Looking for good ideas on how to express support and appreciation to our police. As a chaplain for 10 years I have seen them work up close to defuse family problems, befriend youth, contribute to the community as coaches, take dangerous drivers off the streets, deal with gangs and take on the bad guys. I have seen how the last thing an officer wants to do is discharge his weapon or even unholster it. But he or she does want to go home to his family. So any suggestions out there...
I drop off a couple (sealed) cans of coffee, at the sheriff’s office, every once in a while. Every precinct has a coffee pot, and the rank and file usually have to buy their own coffee.
A friend of mine is doing goodie bags for Mobile PD and MCSD.....when she told me that, a friend and I went to Sam’s and bought close to $100 in chips, cookies, and peanut butter crackers.....we added them up and had over 200 altogether for her to use. Then when word got out to Mobile Republican women, she was inundated with checks to buy more and people doing what I did, actually going out and buying more. She’s got enough to do 450 gift bags for MPD; for the Sheriff’s Dept, she’s going to get big laundry baskets and set them up at the SD with lunch bags beside them so they can get what they want. So proud to be able to call her friend.
My friend called both MPD and the MCSD to ask if it was ok. Both said absolutely and, in fact, the PA folks from both called to thank her.
“I was thinking about this last week. I want to start a drive in my town for people to leave a little extra at Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, Burger King, etc to be used for police officers that come through.”

Last time I was in DD, I told the cashier to put on my tab whatever the cop behind me in line was getting. He said, “thanks, that’s not necessary.”
When I insisted, the cashier said they never charge law enforcement anyway.
I’ve been known to pay for their meals at local restaurants and/or just give them a verbal thanks for their service. It doesn’t take much for them to appreciate that many also appreciate them.
A few years ago we were flying blue ribbons on our cars in support of our Police Officers. Time for another Blue Ribbon campaign.
Start by stop calling Police Officers by the derogatory term COPS, it is as offensive as WOP, SPIC, PIGS, FUZZ OR THE N WORD. They are Police Officers, Sheriff Deputies, or Hwy Patrol.
I just write a nice simple letter to the chief telling my appreciation. You can also just say something quick at a town hall meeting.
Most people don’t realize that, by virtue of being an ELECTED LEO, the county Sheriff is THE chief Law Enforcement Officer in the county. All cities reside in a county (or parish). Who’s in charge? Who will the governor call? Depends on the Sheriff.
Seems like there are a few who take their election seriously: Arpiao and Clarke come to mind.
I bring them an ice cold, unopened can of 7up or Coke. With a smile and a nod I'll tell them, "Stay cool today, I'm with you guys." I always get a smile back.

When Ferguson blew up, I walked into my local police station and told them that I was on their side.
You wouldn’t believe the effect that created. They didn’t come right out and display it, but I felt an enormous wave of gratitude and emotional relief coming from the staff.
It was a powerful moment.
Call your local PD and ask to speak to the Public Relations Officer. Ask him your questions.
You can ask where they order pizza, etc. and then order and have it delivered to the police.
But, I agree about food.
