Muhammad Ali's birthplace of Louisville, Kentucky, is paying tribute Saturday to the late boxing legend, who died Friday in Arizona at 74.

At a ceremony at the city's Metro Hall, Mayor Greg Fischer said flags on government buildings would remain at half-staff until Ali has been laid to rest.

“Sure, he was a great fighter, but you don’t lower The Stars and Stripes for a draft-dodger.”

And not for someone who changes his name from Cassius Clay to Mohammed Whatever. I always thuought he was arrogant!

I think it was his “comeback” that did him in.

Yep. I agree with that. Maybe he came back too soon. He was never knocked out, but he was knocked around on occasion, and the brain is a funny thing. People react differently, and sometimes things show up years later.

BenLurkin:

Please note the following video:

IN July of 2015, a Muslim terrorist opened fire and shooting 7 people, killing five soldiers. Of the 5, 1 was a Purple Heart Recipient, 1 was an Afghanistan combat vet, and one was shot and killed trying to clear people away from the shooter, they didn’t a flag.

Shirley Temple Black in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s as a top American diplomat, serving as a delegate to the United Nations and ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. She didn’t get a flag.

There is a long list of people worthy of this recognition that were “dissed”. And there were some that didn’t deserve it.

Flying the flag at half-staff is an area of flag etiquette that most people want to make sure they get right. It is also an area for which the road to error is routinely paved with good intentions. With that in mind, we offer this refresher course as the all-important intersection where knowledge meets benevolence.

FLYING THE FLAG AT HALF-STAFF: The pertinent section of the Flag Code says, “by order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possesion, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law.

In the event of the death a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that state, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff.” The code also includes other related details including the specific length of time during which the flag should be displayed at half-staff, in the event of the death of a “principal figure”(e.g., 30 days for the death of a sitting or former President, 10 days for the death of a sitting Vice-President,etc.).

But, again, not for a criminal.

He didn't "dodge" the draft. He stood on principle and paid the price.

Well I think if your job is to beat the snot out of others for a living, you give you your credentials as a pacifist. Some principles there. LOL.

the greatest, my ass. In his prime, Mike Tyson would have knocked out Ali in his prime, in about 22 seconds. the greatest mouth, the greatest troublemaker, perhaps.

If "Gus" hadn't died, Tyson might have gone on to a level of greatness like no other. Instead he got tangled with the same nation of islam asshats as Ali.

"Mike Tyson would have knocked out Ali in his prime, in about 22 seconds."

Buster Douglas smoked Tyson by not crapping himself before the first bell and by out-boxing him. Ali, in his prime, would have creamed Tyson.

as a Muslim he was no pacifist but a willing soldier for Allah

his “principle” was don’t fight for America but be ready to fight for Allah

he was no “conscientious objector” as the term is usually understood either legally or morally — i.e., he did not object to ALL war, just to a particular war

he openly said he would fight for Allah and would fight for fellow black people — you can look up the quotes

Ali denied denied Jesus Christ. Never gave a rip about his boxing or his prideful boasts. Prayed for him a number of times.

“Who denies Me I will deny before my Father in heaven.”

Perhaps Islams attraction for Ali was that at the time, this religion served his purposes. Islam was the chosen faith of Malcolm X, who was sort of the Anti-MLK and advocated violence, was done ‘waiting for peace’. Islam also served to keep Ali from having to serve in Vietnam, providing a conscientious objection to war. Apparently, there were very few black Quakers in his area back then.

Malcolm X was also very anti-liberal. He knew their policies would be disastrous for black people. Which probably explains why Ali supported Reagan.

“Even if you disagree with his decision, you have to respect the fact that he stood on principle”

So, you respect abortionists because they, too, stand on their principles?? How about pedophiles that think raping children is “just two consenting people”?? Respect those principles??

Ali was a draft dodger. “Standing on principles” doesn’t change that.

Ali, for all his faults does not begin to approach the evil that is Nelson Mandela. And really, I guess I don’t fault Ali too much really.
