Republicans warm to Donald Trump as Ben Sasse’s third-party pitch falls flat
The Washington Times ^ | May 10, 2016 | S.A. Miller & Valerie Richardson

Far from irreparably fracturing the GOP, Donald Trump is quickly winning the backing of many of the party’s top elected officials, with senators returning to Washington this week pledging their support for him as their nominee.

Outside of Washington, Republican voters are likewise warming to Mr. Trump, and are decidedly cool to calls to recruit a third-party alternative to Mr. Trump and likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, saying there’s too much at stake to give Democrats another four years’ control of the White House.

“I think it’s a great idea, but not for this particular election,” said Gregg Mattox, standing outside an Omaha polling station in Tuesday’s GOP presidential primary. “You split the vote and you’re going to get a liberal Supreme Court and Hillary Clinton in the White House for four years. The timing is just bad.”

A week after he chased his remaining opponents from the race, Mr. Trump is steadily — if somewhat shakily — earning over Republican voters and lawmakers who supported someone else in the bitter primary.

“I’m for the nominee of the party. If it is Donald Trump, I’ll be supporting him wholeheartedly,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, Texas Republican, told reporters at the Capitol, where lawmakers reconvened for the first time since the Republican National Committee chairman declared Mr. Trump the presumptive nominee.

Even Sen. Marco Rubio, who ran against Mr. Trump for the nomination, said despite deep policy differences, he’ll stick by his pledge to back the GOP’s eventual nominee, saying voters have chosen the billionaire businessman.

It won’t matter to Sasse that Trump wins Nebraska by a yuge margin...Sasse is like Cruz and Beck...

I am a proud American, and the Cheney-Lieberman debate made me even more proud to be American. They showed the ideal way of conducting politics.

Trump on his feet(at a podium) is not the same as Trump at a table.

I have the same quirk and give all my presentations seated....round table style.

Good!

It’s time for people to wake up, learn from history, and work to stop Hillary. The only way that can be done is by supporting Trump.

But you have to give credit to Bush for choosing Cheney as his VP and giving him a major role in the administration and listening to his advice.

Ben Sasse has a choice of two, now. Either drop the #NeverTrump act, or leave the Republican party.

Because for better or worse, The Donald IS the face of the Republican party. Especially since the Nebraska sweep.

Coronation is inevitable. The question is, do you want it for The Donald, or for Herself? Those are the only two cookies on the plate.

Sasse works for the meat-packers in Nebraska, who hire tons of illegals.

Ben Sasse was one of the short list that begged conservatives for money so they could win against establishment pols. He has to be on the short list for the Backstabbing Elitist Phony of the Year Award.

Wouldn’t it be funny if Trump chose Cheney as VP! Cheney, always lurking in the shadows of power.

Ben Sasse is a fraud. A fake conservative who loves illegal aliens. How did he fool so many?

Ben Sasse has outed himself as a Cheap Labor Express stooge.
I hope the people of his state remember that when he comes up for election and they Cantorize** him.

Yeah and I hope somehow that the cushy lobbyist jobs could stop in DC...SO many of these scumbags move to K Street after they are thrown out of office or retire.

Needs to stop!!

Seems Cantor is living of GOPe legislation:

Cantor, who lost his own reelection bid in the Republican primary in 2014, has advice for Trump nonetheless. Cantor is mostly worried about trade, since his own business as vice chairman for investment bank Moelis & Co. depends on it – and Trump sounds like an enemy of free trade.

If Trump loses, America is toast. If Trump wins America is toast. America has been toast for at least 20 years. Barry mercifully or mercilessly killed any notions of what America represented - freedom, liberty and the rule of law. The next POTUS can only kick the corpse.

You’re probably right, but it is nice to see WV’s motto tonight: “Mountaineers Are Always Free”.
