(CNSNews.com) - Republican Donald Trump, appearing on Thursday's "Today" show, said transgenders should be allowed to "use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate."
"So if Caitlyn Jenner were to walk into Trump Tower and want to use the bathroom, you would be fine with her using any bathroom she chooses?" host Matt Lauer asked Trump.
"That is correct," Trump said.
Asked for his view on the North Carolina bathroom controversy, Trump said the state has "paid a big price" for requiring transgenders to use the restroom that corresponds with their biological sex.
"Leave it the way it is," he said.
"One of the best answers I heard was from a commentator yesterday, saying 'Leave it the way it is right now.' There have been very few problems. Leave it the way it is. North Carolina, what they're going through with all of the business that's leaving and all of the strife, and that's on both sides -- you leave it the way it is.
"There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate. There has been so little trouble. And the problem with what happened in North Carolina is the strife, and the -- the economic punishment that they're taking."
AD FEEDBACK
Trump said he doesn't know if he has any transgender people working for him. "I probably do, I really don't know."
Trump noted that there's a "big move to create new bathrooms" for transgenders.
"First of all, I think that would be discriminatory in a certain way. It would be unbelievably expensive for businesses and for the country. Leave it the way it is."
I don’t think he’s lost his mind. THIS IS Trump.
Thanks for the interesting comments.
You could very easily be right.
Trump states he would punish women and doctors who get abortions done - the logical answer and he was attacked for it by Cruz and his ilk.
The idea that women should not be punished for abortion was some focus tested idea where it was found women who were pro choice would accept a pro life candidate if the pro lifer pretended he was against abortion while winking to pro choicers they would od nothing about it.
I know this is probably a bad time but will you google Trump telling Romney he lost ‘12 because he was ‘too harsh’ on illegals and a ‘maniac’ for supporting self-deportation? May as well open your eyes all the way.
I must live rent free in your head.
I know what my solution is. I already pack a sig. I can just add a nice sharp blade to my self defense package. If I go into a restroom with my grand daughters and find some pervert, I will give him complimentary gender reassignment surgery on the spot.
I don’t know. This seems pretty black and white to me.
You think blue collar dems are down with his answer? Everyone I have spoken to is horrified at the dem leadership over this. Ive talked to long-time blue collar dems that are completely horrified at the partys position on this. I think maybe the leadership doesnt realize not just everyone is down with this ridiculous crap being a civil rights struggle. They buy the gay thing to a point, but this is a bridge too far for a lot of them, at least the ones I have talked to.
Seems to me smart republican would hammer on this, make it the biggest issue you can. My God, why did he say that about Muslem immigration and outraged all the right people? Did the blue collar dems dig that or not?
FReegards
I see Cruz has already hysterically tweeted about this FIVE times. Hilarious. Breathe, Ted, Breathe.
Aha, The Donald is starting his self-described transformation into a “more Presidential” version of himself...
Actually, this is an example of his Liberal NY values beginning to shine through...
Trump supporters will be in for a rude awakening if he becomes POTUS...
Well, Punk, do you want instant or do you want precision? Go ahead make my day!
1: I hope so. But even if not...
2: The comment is not nearly as bad as some people make it. At least not as far as I saw. How it came across to me was, “We were doing fine for centuries as things were. Why change this NOW? Why is this an issue NOW?” Followed by, “I don’t know. I need to think about this.”
3: If he comes out as 100% in favor of perverts, I will be disgusted and probably turn off my Internet for the next year or so. It won’t CHANGE anything in the end, but the never-Trumpers will become insufferable, just like they already are on this thread.
4: I do mean insufferable. Look at the never-Trump posts on this thread; it’s not shock or disgust or even rational thought. It’s glee. Glee and the desire to hurt the people that they hate.
5: (I consider this the most important one.) Haven’t we seen this over and over and over and over again since the race started? Some statement, taken out of context, usually with a gotcha journalist who’s being paid to make Trump look bad. Ultimately, it turns out that Trump’s positions weren’t always ideal but acceptable in every case so far.
I think he’s earned the benefit of the doubt in this case.
Good advice. But watch out for incoming.
That is why it is difficult to ignore this issue.
Ugh! Super disappointing.
And who exactly is ignoring it? Currently, gays are getting married all over the country. You’re full of wishful thinking and zero practical, real world solutions. It must be nice being so right in your head, but out here in the world, there is damage being done and NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. That’s the REALITY.
It's an issue NOW, because the passage of Gay Marriage has opened the floodgates.
Like I said, I’m anxiously awaiting a walk-back on this one.
Bully for you, a purity argument. Cling tight to that while we continue getting trounced by liberals.
The “solution” is a return to a healthy fear of God and His Plans for each of us individually. Accepting His Son as our personal Lord and Savoir and each of us individually allowing Him to be Lord of our lives.
But I’d agree with any assertion that states “I don’t see that happening anytime soon in this country”, because I certainly don’t.
And we will reap that whirlwind soon enough.
Oh PLEASE.
This isn’t a comment about the survival of conservatism, or being fair, or even about sex.
You’re just trying to hurt people who you don’t like.
