MEXICO CITY The rise of Donald Trump and the anti-immigrant wave he is riding in his presidential primary campaign have alarmed the Mexican government so much that it has reshuffled top diplomats and, according to officials, adopted a new strategy to defend the image of Mexicans abroad.
Trump has consistently targeted the United States southern neighbor, calling Mexican border-crossers rapists and criminals and threatening to cut off the money they send home to their families unless Mexico pays for a border wall. But for months, the Mexican government has opted to remain quiet, with a few high-profile exceptions, rather than publicly challenging Trumps claims.
Under mounting domestic pressure, Mexican officials now say they have chosen a new strategy: to stand up for Mexicans and defend the reputation of their countrymen living in the United States.
In recent months, we have seen a growing anti-immigrant discourse in general, anti-Mexican in particular, and not exclusively from Donald Trump, said a Mexican official who was not authorized to speak publicly on this issue. This set off our fear that it would damage the image of Mexico in the United States.
After just seven months on the job, Miguel Basañez Ebergenyi, Mexicos ambassador to Washington, will be replaced by Carlos Manuel Sada Solana, the consul general in Los Angeles. Paulo Carreño King, a top aide to President Enrique Peña Nieto whose portfolio has included dealing with the foreign media and improving the countrys brand, will take over as the senior Foreign Ministry official responsible for North America.
The United States is Mexicos biggest trading partner, with more than $1 billion in bilateral trade each day, and millions of Mexicans live north of the border. The Mexican government is worried that Trumps rhetoric and wider anti-Mexican sentiment could hurt foreign investment

Build The Wall!! Around the WashPo.
The truth is most who are crossing the border illegally are criminals at this point.
We have made it so easy for most to come in through our Ports of Entry and claim they are visiting or shopping that those that do not have a criminal history in Mexico or the U.S. are allowed to enter legally. Of course many stay past the time allowed on their permit so at that point they are here illegally but that is another issue.
Those that are crossing the desert are not the workers of the past. A rancher that has a ranch right on the border told me it has been 4 years or more since an illegal crosser asked for work of any kind. Normally years ago the workers crossing would ask to work for food or a few days so they would have money to continue on their way. Those crossing now are not interested in working.
Illegals we see out in the pastures are normally young males well dressed for hiking (even good hiking shoes)appear well fed, and scary people. Truly scary people, even the legal green card workers on the ranch do not want to interact with them. Most are no doubt smugglers or scouts for smugglers.
Interesting perspective. Before 1836, people migrated from the US to the Texas province of Mexico with the understanding they were on their own and they wished to eek out an existence
from a somewhat inhospital area. Today they come to the same area from Mexico for the benefits.
And we all have to group think that all of Mexico is full of virtuous people. In general. More than we are
Right.
I say No. Is that why rinsy and his group despise people like me? Of course it is. Loathsome
At least they gave The Donald extra large hands. Smart.
“Yes Cruz does claim to have a tough immigration policy, for some reason Mexican officials and Mormons do not believe he will carry it out. Makes me wonder what he says to some behind closed doors.”
Don’t wonder. Cruz is a politician who will play by the rules and if congress says no wall, then no wall. Trumo says screw the rules, he is building a wall. This is why so many people like Trump. Whatever he says he will do, gets done. But how will that play in congress?
Mexicans getting involved in American politics. How do you feel about that, America? I say, nuke the bastards.
That can only boost Trump’s numbers.
Sounds like they aren’t very mad at Cruz.
U.S. politics is none of Mexico’s business.
Well, he has moved toward Trump’s position but I do not hear much about border sovereignty except for beefing up the border patrol.
Wheres the wall?
It’s Americans who have practiced years of restraint. And there really wasn’t any reason for it.
This is an actual ad launched exclusively in Mexico by Absolut Vodka back in April 2008.
Screw Mexico.
There. Fixed it.
I too have friends on the border, they had to call the police on multiple occasions, for break-ins, killing livestock, attempted theft of cars, and physical threats. Their friends have had deaths in their families and have closed up or demolished homes on the property and still own the land, but moved to the cities for safety.
They are not of the opinion, at least to me, that ALL of the people are this way, but the Coyote, or the guy that guides people across the border for a fee, can be very dangerous. If threatened, they will sometimes abandon the people that paid for safe passage, and they have to fend for themselves.
All that aside, enacting the wall and strict border protection will ensure safety on both sides of the wall, and the drugs will slow dramatically, now that they have ground penetrating radar that can be used on trailers pulled by border trucks and check for tunnels, and drones repurposed from retired military craft, it will tighten up dramatically, when we have a President willing to do that, the current one does not have the will. Hopefully the next one will act.
They don’t care what you think one way or the other....
They just want the continuous stream of cheap labor....
They don’t care when the bad comes in with the good....
Just don’t stop the flow....
You forgot "racist".
They are a very racist culture. Racism is entrenched in and accepted by their culture, which is why the poorest brown people are the ones trying to get here, not Salma Hayek.
I'm told the white people have it pretty good in Meh hee coe. The mestizos, not so much.
