After months of restraint, Mexico adopts new strategy: Standing up to Donald Trump

MEXICO CITY — The rise of Donald Trump and the anti-immigrant wave he is riding in his presidential primary campaign have alarmed the Mexican government so much that it has reshuffled top diplomats and, according to officials, adopted a new strategy — to defend the image of Mexicans abroad.

Trump has consistently targeted the United States’ southern neighbor, calling Mexican border-crossers “rapists” and criminals and threatening to cut off the money they send home to their families unless Mexico pays for a border wall. But for months, the Mexican government has opted to remain quiet, with a few high-profile exceptions, rather than publicly challenging Trump’s claims.

Under mounting domestic pressure, Mexican officials now say they have chosen a new strategy: to stand up for Mexicans and defend the reputation of their countrymen living in the United States.

“In recent months, we have seen a growing anti-immigrant discourse in general, anti-Mexican in particular, and not exclusively from Donald Trump,” said a Mexican official who was not authorized to speak publicly on this issue. “This set off our fear that it would damage the image of Mexico in the United States.”

After just seven months on the job, Miguel Basañez Ebergenyi, Mexico’s ambassador to Washington, will be replaced by Carlos Manuel Sada Solana, the consul general in Los Angeles. Paulo Carreño King, a top aide to President Enrique Peña Nieto whose portfolio has included dealing with the foreign media and improving the country’s brand, will take over as the senior Foreign Ministry official responsible for North America.

The United States is Mexico’s biggest trading partner, with more than $1 billion in bilateral trade each day, and millions of Mexicans live north of the border. The Mexican government is worried that Trump’s rhetoric and wider anti-Mexican sentiment could hurt foreign investment

Hey Mexico. You should have had a few thousand marines at your door for holding one of our soldiers for no reason.

You’re not getting the states back that you were too weak and lazy to tame and fight for way back when.

And take your damn people back. We owe you NOTHING.

Except perhaps a swift and painful bombing for treating our soldier like dirt.

I don’t imagine that a President Trump and President Pena will spend much time talking to each other.

Restraint?

I think the word is wimpiness.

What is it with the Mexico worship?

For you, Mexico, to outsource and thus solve your poverty problems, you need a patsy government wanting to take them in and pay for them. Donald Trump is only saying that maybe we should stop giving you our lunch money and doing your homework.

Bullies never like it when the victim stands up for himself.

I wonder why they are not attacking Cruz.
Cruz claims to have as tough of an immigration policy as Trump.

LETS GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE, evident we have to post it over and over again. Here is Trumps Statement:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best,” he said during the announcement. “They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting.”

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/07/04/trump-stands-by-views-dangerous-mexican-illegal-immigrants-admits-surprised-by.html

He did not, and never has, said that every person coming across the southern border illegally, is a drug dealer, murder or rapist. That is the MSM being purposefully inaccurate, which is easily disproved.

No argument that their government is horrible.

But the article raises a valid point. People say that Mexico would have "no choice" but to agree to Trump's demand to pay for the Wall, else lose remittances. But they do have a choice, just as does everyone who is threatened. The political realities in Mexico are that any Mexican government that agreed to pay the $5-10B mentioned in Trump's memo would collapse. It would be the political equivalent of Americans being economically blackmailed, and told that we could avoid it if we outlawed the American flag and never flew it again. We'd tell whoever is threatening us to go screw themselves, and damn the consequences.

It's the same with Mexico. Trump might have had a better chance of pulling it off if he hadn't made it such a public issue that the Mexicans are forced to defy.

Holding Marine Sgt. Tahmooressi should have been looked upon as an act of war. The guy makes a wrong turn and they lock him up for almost a year? As far as I’m concerned, he was kidnapped and held hostage and that POS in the White house did absolutely nothing about it. And by the way, all the Trump haters out there should remember it was Trump who helped Tahmooressi out financially, gave him $25,000 bucks and I wouldn’t doubt was also behind his eventual release, something of course the media completely ignores.

Good for Trump!

And it was an act of war but Obama likes to bow and heel in front of every dictatorship, third world country, communist country and muslim country.

He may have brought us past the point of no return.

He’s pure communist garbage.

Yes Cruz does claim to have a tough immigration policy, for some reason Mexican officials and Mormons do not believe he will carry it out. Makes me wonder what he says to some behind closed doors.

Mexico has a beautiful climate, mineral riches, oil, resources up the wazoo and still their people have to come here (illegally) to earn a living?

It is because of their corrupt and backward government.

I don't feel sorry for Mexico in the least.

We should adopt the same immigration policies that Mexico has for anybody foolish enough to try to immigrate illegally into that sh!t hole.
