Senators Slam NATO ‘Free-Riders’ in Closed-Door Meeting With Secretary General
Foreign Policy ^ | April 6, 2016 | John Hudson

onald Trump has spent much of his campaign deriding NATO allies for “ripping off” the American taxpayer and failing to contribute to the world’s most powerful military alliance. But on Wednesday, his fellow Republicans joined the chorus during a closed-door meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Capitol Hill, according to sources inside the room.

For under an hour, senators grilled Stoltenberg, a former prime minister of Norway, about why only five members of the 28-nation club spend at least 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense, the official amount NATO recommends each nation set aside. Some expressed particular dissatisfaction with Germany, the fourth largest economy in the world, which does not meet the 2 percent threshold.

“They’re being laggards. I can’t think of a better word for it,” Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Foreign Policy after exiting the meeting. “I have expressed this in Munich, I have expressed this in Davos, I have expressed this in every forum where Europeans are listening.”

Trump has shown an ability to frame the narrative and to discuss topics everyone else is afraid to touch.

NATO members are treating Americans as suckers. And many Senators feel the same way. But they were afraid to speak up until Trump addresses the issue.

The MSM and the politicians constantly attack Trump publicly. But privately, they admit he is right.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

The politicians who attack Trump soon try to copy him.

Another entry in The Trump Effect in action!

It appears that, even though he is still just a candidate and not the President, Donald Trump’s foreign policy, the Trump Doctrine, is being implemented on the world stage! Consider.

Trump formally announced his candidacy for the presidency in the 2016 election on June 16, 2015.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump

He sat down with Bill O’Reilly in June 16, 2015 and said:

“I say that you can defeat ISIS by taking their wealth,” Trump told the Fox News Channel star. “Take back the oil. Once you go over and take back that oil, they have nothing. You bomb the hell out of them, and then you encircle it, and then you go in. And you let Mobil go in, and you let our great oil companies go in. Once you take that oil, they have nothing left.”

The Russian military intervention in the Syrian Civil War began on 30 September 2015, following a formal request by the Syrian government for military help against rebel and jihadist groups.

Around December 17, 2015, Putin offered high praise for the billionaire businessman-turned-Republican presidential front-runner on Thursday during an annual news conference with reporters.

“He is a bright and talented person without any doubt,” Putin said, adding that Trump is “an outstanding and talented personality.”

And in remarks closely mirroring Trump’s assessment of the campaign, the Russian leader called Trump “the absolute leader of the presidential race,” according to the Russian TASS news agency.

Now, in March 2016, the Obama Administration is implementing Donald Trump’s Un-Fair Trade Tarriff policy by slapping 265.7% anti-dumping duties on China.

Donald Trump said that NATO was obsolete, the United States was paying to much, and the free-loaders would have to pay.

Donald Trump has done more for this country in 9 months of campaigning then some Presidents do during their 8 years in office.

And I think we should add, Donald Trumph has done more for this country then Megyn Kelly ever has and ever will.

“Trump has set the agenda for political discussion in 2016 and beyond...”

Only if he wins the nomination.

Otherwise all this will be forgotten in less than a week.

To paraphrase Jack Nickelson’s character in a “Few Good Men”, I think Donald Trump has been saying to them, “Policies? Policies? You can’t handle the Policies!”

None in the media are going to give him props for this, it is unfortunate. The PC crowd will continue to ostracize him as a baffoon. They don’t want their power undermined in anyway.

Re NATO, we got one nation trying to drag the west into a military confrontation with Russia. Not a peep from most of the dolts. These tripwire agreements are inherently dangerous especially when some have little to no skin in the game. Recall back in the 80s when Reagan said he would begin sending intermediate missiles, Pershings, to Europe. Recall the clamor.

NATO members are treating Americans as suckers.

Why shouldn't they treat us as suckers and fools?

Our trade deals and treaties are based on the 'friendship' of elites - how many 'speeches' these countries are willing to pay our congressmen for... and how willing they are to pretend the 'speeches' aren't bribes.

Every trade agreement since WW2 has screwed the American worker but benefitted the elites greatly in some form or another.

All trade agreements are driven by the elites and are designed specifically to benefit them and their friends.

They get away with their crimes due to the apathy of the citizenry.

Those in the cartel are scrambling around as they look and sound evermore foolish and out of touch.

And yet, they bed down with Teddy to drag his sorry tail over the finish line, and here I thought We The People were tired of getting screwed.

I guess it’s alright for cruzettes as long as McConnell/Ryan/Graham/Hatch are screwing us for their dude. Weird disconnect I’d say.

As for the subject of this thread - Trump is using that old time honored gift that some still retain - it’s called common sense, too bad these discussions are taking place behind closed doors. Bring out into the sunlight!!
