As president, Donald Trump would sell off $16 trillion worth of U.S. government assets in order to fulfill his pledge to eliminate the national debt in eight years, senior adviser with the campaign Barry Bennett said.
"The United States government owns more real estate than anybody else, more land than anybody else, more energy than anybody else," Bennett told Chris Jansing Sunday on MSNBC. "We can get rid of government buildings we're not using, we can extract the energy from government lands, we can do all kinds of things to extract value from the assets that we hold."
In a wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, Trump said he would get rid of the $19 trillion national debt "over a period of eight years." The article noted that most economists would consider Trump's proposal impossible, as it could require slashing the annual federal budget by more than half.
However, when pressed on whether the United States could sell off $16 trillion worth of assets, Bennett responded affirmatively on Sunday.
"Oh, my goodness," he said. "Do you know how much land we have? You know how much oil is off shore? And in government lands? Easily."
The federal government's assets totaled $3.2 trillion as of September 2015, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. However, that does not include include stewardship assets or natural resources.

The idea gets even better when you think about the company’s Trump will bring back, they will need somewhere to put all these companies...this will work! TRuMP 2016
Trump doesn’t own it either. It would take an act of congress to liquidate U.S. assets. I love you Trumpeters that think he is going to be able to just unilaterally do anything he wants.
Which means we own the debt also.
“We the people” don’t own squat anymore. We the people have been robbed blind by the feds. We the people are used, abused and discarded in favor of illegals, malcontents, thugs and the royal elitists who think we’re not worth a pot to pee in.
The Constitution is under attack by the very people who have sworn to protect it.
They ride herd on our heat, our gas, our water, our businesses, our finances, our guns, our food, etc., etc.
We the people need to get our country back before there’s nothing left. I fear it may already be too late.
It is the way the Constitution provided that it is be, the government is supposed to be 100% supported by the assets it owns.
It’s an idea worth looking into, then enacting. They call it being resourceful.
This was Harry Brown’s schtick a number of years (decades) ago.
I can’t argue any of your points.
“What a profound idea! Lets sell all our surplus buildings and land to China.”
Lol.
Yeah. Maybe they didn’t think it through.
I don’t like Trump, but selling some government lands is a good idea, so long as the lands are not sold to a foreign power.
I live her in Cali - and Putin is way to the right of our current government.
He simply declares eminent domain on Florida, sells to Putin. Then if anyone gives him any lip, he can threaten to sue California with eminent domain, and sell to China.
With the Trump/Schumer 2016 ticket, it will be easy to push through congress.
Or - he is Trump, so Trump is like the Honey badger - he can do what he wants to do.
There ya go. There are thousandth of ways to cut the size of this bloated out of control government.
One example would be to relocate the federal building in that pricey high rent Wilshire Blvd in West LA, to facility half the size in South Central LA.
Just our Interstates alone are worth several trillion to foreign companies. Of course we’ll then be paying 30 cents per mile to drive on them...
Dump all those leftist/progressive monuments to T.Roosevelt...(Our first marxist president)
Then dismantle BLM...(Both of them!)
Care to show us that clause?
the turnpikes of small flyover states could be worth billions each, but we would be getting more tolls be pay...
haha I suggested this earlier today!!!
The constitution didn’t get us $20T in debt. You can’t just wave a copy of the constitution and get us out of 100 years of deviating from it.
It may not be constitutional for the government to own that land, but it is reality. So is the debt.
Why we need a non-politician who can think outside the box.
EXACTLY!
This Trump Trashing by the establishment networks is getting out of control.
We the people bought all that crap. We the people can sell it.
