The Department of Homeland Security must move faster to test explosive detectors that can sense compounds that have been used in recent extremist attacks and to determine if the devices can be installed at airports and train stations across the country, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said.
For about eight years, federal officials have funded the development of the electronic trace detection system, which would be capable of continuously monitoring an area for vapor from explosives, including the bomb-making material TATP. But while the technology has proved successful in laboratory tests, it hasnt been scheduled for government field tests until the fall. [ ]
TATP, formally known as triacetone triperoxide, is relatively easy to make with materials that are readily available in pharmacies and hardware stores, experts say. Even small quantities can cause large explosions.

For crying out loud. I worked in proposal/design phases of one at least 15 years ago. the big, new and improved detector sat off to the side of the baggage area in Philly Intl. for quite some time.
Especially for Schumers pants and mouth.
Flying cars, too! The Feds need to speed it up! Tell them, Chuckie!
Belay that 15 year statement...that occurred well before 9/11, circa ‘96. I must be getting older faster than I realize... ugh.
Translation: One of my donors needs a few billion dollar federal contract, otherwise I wouldn’t care one bit.
Well the ISIS-supporting baggage handlers will never approve of this.
Relax, there’s plenty of that stuff and more, already here. There’s been plenty of time and places to bring it in, safely and get it to where it needs to be. The muzzie-terrorist lab rats are assembling it, the targets are chosen, and cells are awaiting their ‘go orders’.
There are always going to be bombings outside of any secure area where there are large crowds. I’ve always worried about the unsecured check in areas at international terminals where there are crowds and large amounts of luggage. They just can’t be made secure no matter how far you expand the perimeter.
Our only security is going to come from rooting out the threat in their privileged sancutaries and killing them.
“...rooting out the threat in their privileged sancutaries and killing them...”
x1000.
It must be one of Schumer’s personal investments. Reminds me of the dirtbag, Paulsen that was advising Bush at the end of his term and needed the airport X-Ray machines on line without safeguards, asap to make his millions. They have caught so many terrorists. On the other hand look at the felons and Islamists they have empowered to search us.
The big problem is false positives. Too many from what I hear.
Technology solutions (which are always perishable) to people problems.
The idea is to exclude the people who mean you harm.
Technology actually works to give you a false sense of security that you are being protected, and to amplify the eventual attack. Then government will say “It’s the technologies fault”.
None of it works, not long-term against a diligent enemy you are actually fighting against
Any fool with a University Lab and $50K can make a working prototype, but scaling up for production and the economies of scale requires a substantial investment. Nobody’s putting good money into a bomb-sniffer when they can get 50 times the return by developing cell phone parts.
a hundred dollar vacuum sealer
No money for a border wall, but all kinds of moneys for these stupid domestic surveillance. It is too much for them kicking out 11 million illegals, sp we are going to do surveillance on 300 million
And it’s an Israeli company. Sorry but it’s an election year and Chuckie always covers home plate during election years.
That company's products didn't work, but the taxpayers were stuck with the crap equipment.
Not to mention putting people at risk at the airports.
So for the non-nitrogen based explosives. We sure have got the Chucky S. BS detectors for a very long time though.
