The Department of Homeland Security must move faster to test explosive detectors that can sense compounds that have been used in recent extremist attacks and to determine if the devices can be installed at airports and train stations across the country, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said.

For crying out loud. I worked in proposal/design phases of one at least 15 years ago. the big, new and improved detector sat off to the side of the baggage area in Philly Intl. for quite some time.

There are always going to be bombings outside of any secure area where there are large crowds. I’ve always worried about the unsecured check in areas at international terminals where there are crowds and large amounts of luggage. They just can’t be made secure no matter how far you expand the perimeter.
Our only security is going to come from rooting out the threat in their privileged sancutaries and killing them.

It must be one of Schumer’s personal investments. Reminds me of the dirtbag, Paulsen that was advising Bush at the end of his term and needed the airport X-Ray machines on line without safeguards, asap to make his millions. They have caught so many terrorists. On the other hand look at the felons and Islamists they have empowered to search us.
The big problem is false positives. Too many from what I hear.
Technology solutions (which are always perishable) to people problems.
The idea is to exclude the people who mean you harm.
Technology actually works to give you a false sense of security that you are being protected, and to amplify the eventual attack. Then government will say “It’s the technologies fault”.
None of it works, not long-term against a diligent enemy you are actually fighting against
Any fool with a University Lab and $50K can make a working prototype, but scaling up for production and the economies of scale requires a substantial investment. Nobody’s putting good money into a bomb-sniffer when they can get 50 times the return by developing cell phone parts.

That company's products didn't work, but the taxpayers were stuck with the crap equipment.

So for the non-nitrogen based explosives. We sure have got the Chucky S. BS detectors for a very long time though.
