RICHMOND, Va. -- Why?
Why did the shooter open fire as soon as state Trooper Chad P. Dermyer approached him at Richmond's Greyhound bus station?
Why did he keep shooting and fighting till the end, as state police superintendent Col. Steven Flaherty described Thursday night?
Why was he in Richmond?
An official source identified the shooter as 34-year-old James Brown III of Aurora, Illinois.
CBS 6 found a James Brown III., an African-American with a long criminal history in Aurora, whose date of birth matches up with the information from our source.
Brown is well known to police there.
We talked to his aunt in Aurora, Edith Brown, who had helped raise Brown and had allowed him to stay with her until December, when she says she told him he had to leave.
She said, "He always liked the criminal side."

She was upset about what happened, but not surprised.
"He had a lot of anger about the police in the past," she said. "He pretty much thought he wanted to be infamous . . . in terms of having a showdown. He always praised those people who got into shootouts with police."
Court records show James Brown III had been charged with murder, intent to kill, aggravated battery with a firearm, failure to obey police, resisting a corrections officer, aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, aggravated battery of an unborn child, numerous drug charges, intimidation, domestic battery, felony possession of a weapon, among many driving charges.
We were unable to obtain a booking photo, and it's unclear how many charges he was ultimately convicted of and imprisoned for over the years.
Edith Brown talked with us by phone as police were on their way to her home to talk about what happened.
She said her nephew vowed that his prison days were over.
"He said he would never go back to prison again," she said. "He would fight it out with them."
James Brown III was declared dead soon after arriving at VCU Medical Center.
Wooo! I don't feel so gooooood ...
Yup, our political leaders refuse to identify the real problem, and instead they blame the sheepdogs. No wonder the wolves are amping up their feeding frenzy.
He resisted police because he was being told by Obama using his Bully Pulpit begining with the Zimmerman trial that he was a victim. Surprized he didn’t say it was for Treyvon.
What ticks me off is we had a black candidate for president who said nothing but it took a black democrat sheriff from Milwaukee who has condemed it for what it was.
Someone should have shot him the first time around.
Because he was just misunderstood
No, I didn’t call it “Chiraq,” that’s a very mild nickname which won’t get censored. Use your head.
I’ll message you the nickname.
Cut it out. This is Alex Jones conspiracy false flag crapola.
Call evil by its name. The theory that the govt is always trying to shot people during some training exercise is getting so old
Unlike his namesake, he doesn’t feel good.
At least the mother is not defending him, you can at least respect that, sometimes you have to see what your children are and accept it.
Where did you see his mother quoted? Unless I missed something, that was his aunt who accurately described his liking criminality, his admiring those who shot cops, eagerness to do the same, etc.
If his mother is found and interviewed, chances are it’ll my baby dindu nuffins, he wuz a goot boy, he was thinking about community college and was about to get a recording contract, etc...
I meant his aunt, typo, my fault.
Didn’t read the article, just linking where the picture came from.
“She said her nephew vowed that his prison days were over.”
But not for his spawn, James Brown IV, V, VI, VII, VIII...
The Jade Helm training conspiracy threads may be overly paranoid thoughts from bloggers, but the reality between actual training exercises occurring and bad outcomes happening should give pause to anyone. These nightmare scenarios are taking place.
That was the only sentence that even mentioned a conspiracy theory, and it was just to mention that there have been several incidents that have occurred during training exercises. There is no examination of the percentage of training exercises and actual incidents, thus it was just a note in passing. In no way does this article go any further in either support or refutation of the conspiracy theory.
Now who is overreacting?
And don’t forget that Blacks are always incarcerated at a higher rate than other races for no reason at all!
Absolutely no reason whatsoever!! Except for evil white racism, that is.
Whitey made up laws against murder and robbery just so he could have an excuse to harass and lock up dindus
Yep, behavior has nuttin' ta do wid it!
Yes he was a total thug. No argument. But were they really training cops by having them confront civilians who had no prior warning that they were being approached for this reason? If so, was that wise? Not excusing the thug, of course.
