Since I consider myself a traditional conservative, many friends of mine, on both the Right and the Left, are puzzled by my unwavering support for Donald Trump.
Their bewilderment is understandable. Trump is often rude and obnoxious. His demeanor can be arrogant and dismissive. At times, he comports himself as reckless and willing to lash out prematurely, prior to fully understanding all of the facts at hand. To put it simply, he is a wrecking ball.
Still, given all of this baggage, I have my feet planted firmly in Camp Trump. But why? How can a principled, pragmatic, deliberate conservative be drawn to such a candidate? It is because I believe conservatism doesnt stand a chance in this country without first delivering a very heavy dose of populism.
Populism Versus Conservatism
Populism, at least Trumps version of it, is a platform built largely on the principle of economic nationalism. It focuses on three primary policy areas: trade, defense, and immigration.

Unusual from the Federalist
I support him because he’s the only one who can beat Hillary.

I agree. He’s a nationalist and that’s what we need now.

Great article!
My takeaway is...
Everyone would completely back Trump if he stopped being a jackwagon. (I'm a Trump supporter by the way).

How insightful.
I agree with you.
We see all these posts on FR, claiming that Trump cannot beat Hillary. But I think (barring *massive* voter fraud) Trump would bring in a landslide like we haven’t seen before.
(I remember reading somewhere that fraud can only influence very close elections; don’t know it that’s true or not, but I don’t think that Trump v. Clinton would be close at all.)
Just MHO.

For the many it will turn-off, it's also turning on far more converts to the GOP than ever before.
All these polls showing Cankles beating Trump nationally are BS because they are all taken using "Likely Voters," i.e., people who voted in 3 of the last 4 cycles.
This doesn't include the Trump voters who usually don't vote or who never voted before. Their heads are never counted in these polls, and it's just as well. They are almost too numerous to count, as you'll see next November.
It is this voting bloc that has GOP's 2016 turnout up over 100% nationally. Hillary is going to run into a D-10 Caterpillar (huge bulldozer).
Great article describing populism, and Trump, and why we are where we are now....in of all places The Federalist.
“Bushes 41 and 43, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama would all consider this position as lacking in compassion. But the overwhelming majority of Americans understand that what truly lacks compassion is when a society attempts to absorb a group or groups of people it cannot properly and effectively assimilate in a fair and just manner. They realize, among other things, that when we fail to address this issue firmly, we are helping to drive down wages for hard-working Americans; we are further stressing our overworked public education system; and we are taxing our public assistance programs to an extent that our local, state, and federal governments are increasingly less capable of addressing.”
The Mexican cartel Sinoala is into human smuggling, smuggling Mexicans, Hondurans, Nicaraguans—you got 5k: 3K down, 2K from your family on arrival, you get to a stash house.
These `stash houses’ smell worse than feed lots, if you’ve ever driven past one. The smell of feces, sweat from walking miles through the desert, body odor—the smell could knock a buzzard off a gut wagon. These people are denied food and water as punishment, placed in stifling trailers for punishment and beaten and whipped like dogs.
If they can’t pay, they turn them over to human trafficking: prostitution and worse. It’s just another way of making money for them.
Our Border Patrol gets a 911 call from an illegal somewhere near highway 86 in Arizona, and they send out a chopper, patrols, dozens of BPs find them, then give them water and bring them back to health.
So the cartels bring in illegal people, drugs and guns which victimize Americans. The show I saw had these masked criminals shouting on tape, `Por la raza!’ but for them, its for the money. These people are their stock in trade, and they treat them like cattle.
A lot of these `migrants’ are slaves. House slaves, drug slaves, sex slaves. How is this policy “compassionate”?
The ultimate irony is for those among us profiting from this `salutary neglect’ of federal immigration law—thus, human smuggling and trafficking—the ones who take the drugs, visit the prostitutes, use the illegal guns, those who need fresh slaves to clean their pools, trim their grass and make their beds: they are the first to call the rest of us nativists, xenophobic and racist.
Yeah, the system is broken. First, a complete moratorium on all new immigration. Secure the border. Shoot the cartel members on sight. Show those the door who knew coming here was breaking our law. Reform the INS command and control higher echelons—a complete and systemic reform promising them there are no rules of engagement when dealing with the cartels. Assure the states we will work with them, not against them: particularly Arizona. Quarantine California. Suspend H-1B visas for white collar jobs.
Then we can start issuing work visas to Mexican and central-American—just like every legal immigrant who would give anything to live here, those who have waited their turn, like legal immigrants, so they can work at “jobs Americans don’t want.’ That’s comprehensive immigration reform.
Enough. Go Trump. Win win win.

“We see all these posts on FR, claiming that Trump cannot beat Hillary.”
Yes, and it’s all msm nonsense. Freepers ought to know better than to fall for it.
“But I think (barring *massive* voter fraud) Trump would bring in a landslide like we havent seen before.”
Yes, it’s very clear that’s what would happen, Hillary is struggling to beat an 87 year old communist.
For crying out loud, 20,000 voters in MASSACHUSETTS quit the democrat party to vote for Trump, who then won 50% of the vote here in the primary.
It won’t even be close.
But that’s assuming Romney, Grahamnesty, et al don’t switch parties and campaign for Hillary.
crazy how so many people called themselves conservative just a few short months ago. I am not going to give up on conservatism.
I would have written that if I could write.
Excellent.
Very well written article. I emailed it to my 28 year old son who is a Trump supporter but is frustrated trying to explain it to lefty friends.
Gay for Trump?
Well summarized. I agree completely.
