Washington (AFP) - Donald Trump described his foreign policy as an "America first" approach that will stop the US from being systematically "ripped off."
The Republican frontrunner, who has spent his entire career in business, gave the most in-depth discussion so far on foreign policy in a phone interview with the New York Times.
During the conversation, he detailed his views on issues ranging from East Asian security to Syria, the Islamic State group and relations with allies such as Saudi Arabia.
Trump said he was not an isolationist, but described the United States as a poor debtor nation that disproportionately funds international alliances such as NATO and the United Nations.
Similarly lopsided relationships exist with allies such as Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia, he said.
"We have been disrespected, mocked and ripped off for many many years by people that were smarter, shrewder, tougher," he told the Times.
Republican presidential front-runner... "So America first, yes, we will not be ripped off anymore. We're going to be friendly with everybody, but we're not going to be taken advantage of by anybody," he said.

He talked about stopping buying oil from Saudi Arabia and letting SK and Japan build nukes.
both very good ideas.
Good. Donald is talking about taking care of business. No gossip, no teasing or Catfighting today. This is what I want him doing for the next three months. We are almost in the Home Stretch before the nomination. Stay serious.
GREAT!
As an ex Cruz guy, these are the threads I like a lot
Trump talking substance.
who cares about whether ted has 9 or no mistresses.
he’s going nowhere.
Trump thinks like we do. That’s why he is doing well.

In Donald Trumps Worldview, America Comes First, and Everybody Else Pays
FReepmail is OK with me if it's OK with you...
You don’t do what Trump has done in life without having a dead serious side that knows how to get things done. I’ve been in the construction business...just a portion of what he’s done and it ain’t easy.
IMO we are very fortunate that he’s had the guts to do something about our horrible problems - much of which were caused by letting the Harvard lawyers run us into the ground.
nothing to hide. Enthusiasm? yes and no ten times a day with Donald.
But definitely voting for him.
I thought the NY values comment pitted state against state and of course, I live here. Got over that one.
then the Carson dropping out thing.
The shame mails.
The Chicago violence comments. That sealed it.
Lying about having an argument about lack of health insurance coverage with his wife. They ALWAYS had coverage.
Taking Bush’ and others’ endorsements.
like I said, my enthusiasm for trump goes up and down often because he says VERY smart things one second then posts a picture of a challenger picking his nose the next.
But I am voting for him. That is absolute.
I hate the threads about Ted cheating or this and that because I liked the guy a lot and I still instinctively defend him.
And I think I got so mad yesterday I said i’m switching my vote back to him, lol, because I hate that people are posting so much about this affair stuff, it was my petty way of getting them mad.
But i’m pulling for trump in three weeks in NY. Was going to volunteer in the city for him but got email saying they were overloaded etc., plus i’m just not the type to call and say “please vote for so and so”
i’ll hand out flyers at the ferry :)
and I love the cats picture!
my little buddy is my best buddy.
my little buddy is my best buddy.
Trump is the only one who regularly talk about the 19-21 trillion debt. The other candidates seem to talk about them in passing or when asked about it - not a focus for them
I would love to see a Trump administration do an audit of all the various forms of foreign aid that we the people pay finance every year. I imagine it’s in the tens of billions a year. There’s no good reason for any of it, as far as I can tell.
The other candidates are fueled by their ultra rich donors, who profit immensely by selling out America. The URD’s are just fine increasing their own wealth, by draining the vast middle class.
The foreign aid total is nothing compared to $505 Billion we lose to China every year, and the $3 TRILLION we spent on Iraq war by Bush-43, and Trillions more we spend defending S. Korea + Germany + Saudi Arabia + NATO + Policing Straits of Hormuz to protect oil flow to China & Japan with borrowed money from China & Japan.
Even though direct foreign aid is only 1% of above expenditures, that too should be canceled because we are in debt to our eyeballs.
Make AMERICA great again by putting AMERICA first

Well said.
Trump speaks so clearly, that it sometimes seems odd to people trained to expect runarounds and doubletalk from politicians.
“America first foreign policy” encapsulates in 4 words his policies on immigration, trade, currencies and international capital flows, environmentalism, military interventions, international agencies (UN, WTO, NATO to name a few) and many other key areas.
Welcome aboard
If you have not seen the Trump video about the snake, well worth the watch. A little over 3 minutes long.
